Identify and select an alter-globalization movement or campaign related to your theme. Remember that, in contrast to true “anti-globalization” movements, alter-globalization movements are not opposed to transnational integration. In fact, many alter-globalization movements support increasing global integration, but only in certain ways. Crucially, they are critical of one or more important aspects of the kind of globalization we have seen over the past few decades. Often, they are specifically critical of ‘G’ or neoliberal globalization, though it may not always be as simple as that. While some particular policies of major organizations like the WHO or UNICEF could be seen as having “alter-globalization” qualities, usually the term is used to refer to grassroots social movements and/or civil society organizations in which normal people, NGOs and sometimes local governments play a central role. (Some examples of groups involved in alter-globalization work include Extinction Rebellion or Slum Dwellers International).
Note: For this assignment, you can think of protest movements as having informal, fluid and decentralized organizational structures, while campaigns are more formal in their organization and specific in their focus. Campaigns may help further the goals of a movement. For example, the anti-sweatshop movement in the 1990s included campaigns targeting specific companies like Nike or The Gap. You may focus on either a movement or a campaign for this project.
