Yes, I support the recommendation. The recommendation suggests that nurses should be permitted to practice at the full extent of their education and training (Institute of medicine, 2010). I believe the barriers are a hindrance to the country. According to Knight (2019), by 2032, there would be a shortage of about 21,100 to 55,200 primary care providers. The causative factors of the shortage are an aging population, an increase in health comorbidities, and the decline of medical students going into primary care practice. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) possess the knowledge and skills to provide quality, cost-effective, patient-centered, community-based healthcare. Removing the barriers would decrease provider shortages, increase access to quality healthcare in underserved communities, and reduce healthcare costs (i.e., unnecessary ER visits).

According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) (2015), research has shown that states with fewer practice restrictions or full practice authority have better health outcomes, decreased ER visits, and reduced healthcare costs. Research has shown that APNs provide care equal to or greater than physicians concerning overall health outcomes, diagnosis, treatment, management, and patient satisfaction (American association of nurse practitioners, 2015). These factors prove that APNs are well qualified to provide safe and effective healthcare.
