Text that scores a readability grade level of 8 or below will be readable by around 85% of the general public. Much of the information we provide to patients is written at a very high level. The patient cannot be expected to follow instructions he/she does not understand. Research patient education materials at your clinical sites. Use any materials except those found on Up-to-Date. Students may not use the same materials. Find a readability measurement tool online – there are many different ones available. Determine the readability score of the material you chose. In the assignment, clearly and thoroughly describe the tool used as well as the scale used by that tool. Discuss the type of information used – medication handout, discharge instructions, wound care, etc. Also include the readability level result.
