Prostitution Is Exploitation

Some argue that all prostitution is exploitation and does not constitute as work. Others do not think women are being victimized, but rather see them as agents constructing their own sexuality, which can be liberating. Which position do you support (or you could argue for elements of each side of the argument) and why? Use the Kelly book to support your ideas.

This paper must be 2-3 pages long, double-spaced using examples ONLY from the book “Lydia’s Open Door” by Patty Kelly. Ideas generated from class include:

Exploitive:
1. obgladas are forced to have sex
2. workers report to pimps
3. The zone is a service aimed at men. Women are objectified by them.
4. Mexican government use the workers to promote a false sense of what they are doing.
5. The workers’ identity as a sex worker cannot be shaken. They will be recognized as a sex worker by clients in public

Non-exploitive:
1. Sex work is work, the workers negotiate own prices and the work is physical
2. It is not a desireable job
3. Workers set own hours, can refuse clients, and set own rules and prices
4. The workers can charge for extra services
5. You can compare the career as running a business. you must report to work to earn money
6. The workers go against norms by being sexually devious such as performing oral and anal sex, and not only missionary.
7. **The women are the breadwinners of the household and the head of the household. They support children.
