Students will select an apparel or fashion item and research the data needed to source it globally. In completing this project, students will be able to apply the skills acquired in prior semesters, i.e., International Trade and Import / Export Regulations (HTSUS Classification and US duty rates), etc. a) Find two (2) different factories in two different countries. (These must be overseas factories, See footnote regarding USA based factories) where the item can be produced. This a comparative analysis so the product has to be the same product from each factory.
(note: Because of increased interest in products “Made in USA”, if the student wishes to add a USA factory for a 3rd comparison they may do so. This is not required and strictly optional)
b) Explain in detail why these countries were selected, e.g., trade agreements, special duty preferences, favorable range of services, fair trade practices, etc etc.
c) Prepare a Full Value Costing Comparative Analysis (including Direct Costs, Indirect Cost/Risk and Macro Cost/Risk) for the item from both selected factories, including all necessary country specific details d) Decide where the item should be sourced from and describe the management process (include a detailed planning calendar) for the product to reach retail shelves e) Give and substantiate your recommended retail price justify its validity: e.g.: market competition, instrinsic value, luxury item, unique product, sustainably sourced, etc. A standard product cost sheet, as used internally by companies to understand financial costs, profits and to set retails will be completed.
