I believe that programs educating women about prenatal care is crucial. I also agree with you that we can educate teens on prevention of unwanted pregnancy is key but is not always easy to do. The earlier you can educate a mother regarding prenatal care the better outcome for a healthy baby and mother. Many of the biological risk factors for low birth weight babies is relative to the mother’s health and behavior. This may be detected and controlled with adequate and early prenatal and preconception care by the mother (D’Angelo, Bryan, Kurz, 2016).
We also need to educate women on detecting pregnancies and what to do when they find out they are pregnant. Some women do not like to tell anyone they are pregnant or seek out a doctor until they are farther along in their pregnancy. Education for these women is critical to help them understand the earlier the evaluation and treatment of the pregnancy the better it is for the mother and child.
There are many other reasons that a woman may not want to seek treatment including socioeconomic status, age, fear of medical treatment and unwanted pregnancies. We as nurses, need to be able to help and educate these women about the importance of prenatal care.
