Chapter6/7
On May 27, 2020, nationwide protests that followed after the killing of George Floyd by the Minnesota police officer, Derek Chauvin, remains one of the bizarre moments in the United States’ history. The protests were taking place amid the curfew to curb the spread of coronavirus that continues to cause people sleepless nights globally. During the protests, properties worth millions were vandalized, and six more people were shot to death by police (Taylor, 2020). Floyd’s case is just one of the several cases where the law enforcers have shot to death unarmed civilians without first assessing the situation to ascertain whether there is a need to force such unnecessary force (Michaud, H. (2013).
In the lawsuit, a Florida officer guilty of negligence for shooting caretaker, a Florida based police officer was sentenced to one year in jail after shooting caretaker Charles Kinsey. Kinsey was shot after going after his employer, Arnaldo Rios Soto, who fled from his home carrying a shiny silver toy truck (AP News, 2019). The situation looked like Rios was in danger, and that is why he was fleeing from Kinsey. A bystander who happened to have recorded a video of the incident was purportedly said to have alarmed the law enforcers who arrived at the scene, and without properly assessing the situation, Jonathan Allende, one of the police officers, fired three shots at Kinsey. Unfortunately, one shot hit Kinsey on the leg. The law enforcer told the court that when they arrived at the scene of the incident, it looked like a hostage situation and needed to protect Kinsey. Even though the officer was acquitted of a felony, it is unprofessional for trained police officers to behave how Allende and his colleagues behaved (AP News, 2019). Although justice was served, things seem not to change (Taylor, 2020).
