Nurse practitioner consultations in primary health care: patient, carer, and nurse practitioner qualitative interpretations of communication processes. Primary health care research & development

Week 1: Main Discussion Post Competencies for Nurse Practitioners The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties set up competencies that nurse practitioners (NP) should engage in order to ensure that they are capable of delivering safe, quality care to their patients (NONPF, 2017). These competencies are essential in other to combat the challenges of transferring rapidly expanding knowledge into practice and be able to function in a healthcare environment that is constantly changing (NONPF, 2017). The nine competencies include scientific foundation, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery system, ethics, and independent practice (NONPF, 2017). Successful completion of the advanced practice nurse practitioner program includes completion of all nine competencies by the NP regardless of their specialty or population focus. Practice Enquiry Competencies Practice inquiry competencies involve a safe and reliable forum where practitioners reflect and learn from clinical dilemmas faced in their daily work life. The practice inquiry competencies are subdivided into specific objectives, which are leadership in the translation of new knowledge into practice, generates knowledge from clinical practice to improve practice and patient outcomes, applies clinical investigative skills to improve health outcomes, leads practice inquiry, individually or in partnership with others, disseminates evidence from inquiry to diverse audiences using multiple modalities and analyzes clinical guidelines for individualized application into practice (NONPF, 2017). Achieving these competencies during the program ensures that NP students gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide care as an independent practitioner (NONPF, 2017). NP have a distinct knowledge and skills and are also able to provide care in an expanded scope of practice, and they can lead and participate in research that is to their practice environment (Lambert & Housden, 2017). Implementation of Patient Inquiry competencies As a new graduate nurse practitioner, there are challenges that I will encounter as I continue to provide care for my patients. There will be days that I will second guess my decision on a treatment or care plan for a patient. Therefore I will implement the practice inquiry competencies to provide my patient with the best care possible. The practice inquiry competencies provide several strategies such as identifying the clinical problem, appraising evidence to incorporate in practice, literature search methods to search for the best clinical evidence, and the use of an electronic database to assess clinical practice, reviewing patient technology, exploring behaviors and risk factors, using evidence-based practices to support changes in clinical management and template development (NONPF, 2017). Using the practice inquiry competencies will allow effective collaboration with other caregivers to achieve optimal care for the patient. Advanced nurse practitioners are increasingly consulting with other providers for activities such as clinical reasoning to come up with a differential diagnosis of patients’ medical problems or prescribing medication (Barratt & Thomas, 2018). NP also maintain their competency thought reading and to incorporate evidenced-based publications into their practice (Lambert & Housden, 2017). Integrating evidence-based research with clinical expertise into practice and the patient and family values, it will lead to a remarkable patient outcome. References Barratt, J., & Thomas, N. (2018).
