Instructions:
Weeks 4-6 contain three of the most important challenges facing leaders today; technology, innovation, and sustainability. In groups, you will address two of the three challenges in the following manner:
Step One: Research
As a group, you will research, using the Internet or business journals, the selection of companies that will seek to illustrate the skills needed to successfully lead the challenges you have chosen.
You will select two sets of companies (4 companies in total); each set coming from a different industry.
Each set of companies will consists of a company that has or is meeting the leadership challenge (technology, innovation or sustainability) and a company that is struggling or has failed to meet the challenge.
Example Sets of Companies: Walmart and Sears on competitive sustainability or Ford and Volvo on innovation. You will select a total of four companies and two challenges (2 companies for each challenge).
Additional research on the challenges to supplement the class material is also a good idea. The research collected should clearly demonstrate the success or failure or the companies.
Our two sets of companies are as followed:
1. Google vs Yahoo (sustainability)
2. Netflix vs Block Buster (innovation).
At one stage both Google and Yahoo was competing neck and neck, but in the latter years Google was able to sustain itself while Yahoo folded. So, from this information I have one dominating company and one struggling company with which to make comparisons.
Also using Netflix contrasting it with Blockbuster to show how one company innovated, while the other stayed behind as the world was changing around them.
Step Two: Pulling the Research Together
As a team, you will address the following required elements:
Identify and discuss the two leadership challenges that you selected.
Discuss the nature of the challenges and the skills a leader would need to meet the challenges.
Compare the two companies from a leadership perspective: Why and how is one company’s leadership addressing the challenge well and the other one not?
Make specific recommendations (at least 3) as to how the leadership of the unsuccessful company could or should have (if they no longer exist) improved the approach to leading to meet the challenge.
Step Three:
Now that your team has completed the research and answered the questions above, you will write two formal business letters. Be sure to format the letter as provided in this template: Formal Business Letter Template. Although business letters do not generally use APA in-text citations and a reference list, these letters will. Your letter will be comprised of:
Address the letters to: The President of each of the struggling companies. Address each letter to the appropriate President (current president or last president if the business no longer exists). You will be writing the letter from the perspective of the senior manager in the same company representing your team. Be sure to give your team credit.
In the opening paragraph, outline the challenge and the skills needed to meet the challenge;
Subsequent paragraphs will set out the conclusions drawn as to what successful leaders are doing in leading the challenge, the conclusions drawn as to what is not being done by your company (comparison results) and the recommendations as to how the leadership can improve the approach to leading and meeting the challenge;
A closing paragraph will summarize the type of improvements expected from the recommendations and why these recommendations will bolster leadership effectiveness and meet the challenge.
Step Four: Enclosures
Enclosure 1 – Summary of Research Selection Process
One page summary explaining why and how the research process evolved to select the companies for each challenge. The description of the process must include all research reviewed but excluded from use in the paper.
Enclosure 2 – List of Research Resources in APA
In-text citations will appear in the body of the letter as needed while references will be considered an Enclosure and will be set out as the template suggests.

Third person writing is required. Third person means that there are no words such as “I, me, my, we, or us” (first person writing), nor is there use of “you or your” (second person writing). If uncertain how to write in the third person, view this link: http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/first-second-and-third-person.
