The mystery: were they legally slaves from Cuba that could be sold within the United States? Or, since importation of slaves from Africa had been outlawed in the U.S. since 1808, were these people being smuggled illegally, and therefore free to go home to Africa?
This film shows the awful experience of the Atlantic Slave Trade, but it also shows the debate about slavery in the U.S., and even features a former president, John Quincy Adams, who eventually becomes the lawyer for the slaves in the U.S. Supreme Court.
