You can pick one of the options from the list bellow. Pictures count for the 8-10 page count.
Please note: new topics may be added as we go along
Write 8-10 pages on ONE of the topics below. Whatever you choose, be sure to pick works of art created before 1850 as subjects of your study.
1. Compare and contrast Shelley’s Frankenstein and Voltaire’s Micromégas. What do these works tells us about the late 18th and early 19th centuries? Compare and contrast the element of science fiction in both. Try to use comparisons with art works to illustrate your argument.
2. Compare and contrast a work of Mozart and a work of Beethoven. Choose paintings that seem to exemplify the mood in each piece.
3. Write a review of an IU-based concert in which Classical and Romantic works are performed and flesh out the review to explore literature and art related to those works.
4. Find and read a Romantic poem from the e-anthology. What are the elements of Romanticism in the poem? Describe the form and content of the poem and compare it to at least three Romantic paintings of your choice.
5. Compare an eighteenth century painting to an early nineteenth century painting. What elements of Enlightenment, Neoclassicism, or Romanticism do you see in each? Feel free to investigate the life of the painters discussed and the meanings of these terms. What are the subjects of the paintings? Are there any literary connections to be made? You may also find examples in an art museum of your choice or even in the IMU. Be sure to identify your chosen artworks clearly.
6. Compare Shelley’s Frankenstein to at least three Romantic paintings. Show that you are reading Vaughan as you formulate your answer.
7. Pick out any 3 paintings in the assigned pages of Vaughan. How do we see characteristics of the late 18th or early 19th centuries in each? Analyze each painting as carefully as possible but also describe other cultural implications in the larger context of each painting. The other arts and larger historical forces are appropriate to bring in to the discussion.
8. Compare and contrast a piece of Schumann and a piece of Beethoven. Which sounds more Romantic, which more Classical? How does the form differ?
9. Relate any three works of art (poetry, music, painting etc) to at least two events from your timeline or the class timeline (on Canvas).
10. Discuss what the monster might mean by these statements: “I remember Adam’s supplication to his Creator, but where was mine? He had abandoned me, and, in the bitterness of my heart, I cursed him”; and: “You must create a female for me, with whom I can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for my being” Should Dr. Frankenstein have done so? You may also wish to read Harvard historian Jill Lepore’s recent piece on Frankenstein in The New Yorker magazine. Here it is: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/02/12/the-strange-and-twisted-life-of-frankenstein
11. Relate any three Romantic paintings to the three Romantic poems quoted in Shelley’s Frankenstein. These are: from Coleridge (Rime of the Ancient Mariner), Shelley (Mutability) and Wordsworth (Lines Composed A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting The Banks Of The Wye During A Tour, July 13, 1798).
12. Relate any three paintings, Romantic or neoclassical, to any three works of Beethoven.
