Joyce Morgan has just started working as a Medical Assistant for a group of Gastroenterologists. She is unsure why she needs to know and use root operation codes and asks you to explain what they mean and why there are so many to choose from, and why she needs to use them.

Your office has experienced a number of insurance claims that have been denied. The cause cannot be contributed to any one person or event. What could you do to deal with the denied claims and to decrease the possibility of the denials continuing.

Mrs. Chin notices the Medical Assistant is marking many things on the form in the computer as she does her initial assessment and during the doctor’s exam. She adds even more to the form when the doctor orders lab work. Mrs. Chin is concerned that she is being charged for too many things that were not done during the visit. She asks you to explain everything you have marked and to tell her why so many things are listed. What would you say to Mrs. Chin to explain the Superbill? How do you explain why all the information is needed in order that the coders can file the insurance claim?
