1. In this learning activity, you will write an essay that critically evaluates one of the major genres of literature and how it contributes to our understanding of humanity. Choose from fantasy, biography, romance, mystery, science fiction, autobiography, informational, or poetry.

Select one of those genres for a critical essay on how the work represented in this genre helps us better understand ourselves and each other. 

For example, one might select the fairytale genre that would include works such as Snow White, Cinderella, and Little Red Riding Hood.  You may wish to approach this from the perspective of a child and what children learn from the genre. Additionally, to provide contrast, you may also offer an adult’s perspective on how lessons learned as a child from the fairytales translate into adulthood. As you evaluate your genre, consider it from different viewpoints to provide a thorough analysis. Be sure to provide a reference listing of all sources used in your essay and follow the essay guidelines below.

Essay Guidelines:

Your research should be documented by citing at least five credible sources, such as a textbook, a newspaper, a biographic article, book, or website. Wikipedia and any similar online reference sites where the content may be authored by anyone are not considered credible sources for scholarly writing.

Your essay should be 300–500 words in length, single spaced, and in APA format.
