It is a 2500 words summative essay for the Philosophy of Language Module for Philosophy BA in UCL. It is on H. P. Grice’s theory of reducing language to psychology, where he makes a distinction between sentence meaning and speaker meaning. It needs to include a summary of his argument in a concise and clear form as well as an evaluation of his theory. Preferably it should include references to other relevant thinkers within that evaluation. I have attached the required text. The other recommended further readings are as follows: Jeff Speaks, 2019, ‘Theories of Meaning’ Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Section 1 & 3.1 Alexander Miller, 1998, Philosophy of Language, ch.7 Emma Borg, 2005, ‘Intention Based Semantics’, in Lepore and Smith (eds) The Oxford Handbook of the Philosophy of Language, pp.250-267 There are also a few other philosophers mentioned in the handout attached
