Intro – Why Explore the Relevance of Home and Community?
Where you live, and the family you are from makes a difference. Here are some of the empirical differences that we see between different “groups” of students. If we know different strategies, and we think about differentiation, it’s important to look at the children that could potentially benefit the most from providing good teaching. First, Extensive research has demonstrated that students in low-income or poverty households are more likely to experience family stress, verbal and physical abuse, neglect, drug and alcohol use in the home, and other sources of emotional pain and trauma—and may develop different responses or reactions to stressful situations.[3] (Links to an external site.) Cultural conflicts between students and teachers and administrators may also result in a disproportionate number of Black students cited for infractions, as well as teacher-student exchanges that escalate and fail to properly address situations that arise.
