I don’t know how to handle this Writing question and need guidance.1) Read the book Contemporary Chinese Artists on CCLE (Week 8) which profiles a group of Chinese artists active from the 1980s to the present. You can also consult the CCA Contemporary Chinese Art Reader for additional information. 2) Choose one of the artists that is featured in either book. Do some additional research on that artist; look them up on the internet, investigate their body of work, and if needed consult other books (such as art catalogues at the library about that artist). 3) After familiarizing yourself with the artist’s work, select one piece of artwork to write about. The work could be a traditional work of art, such as a drawing, painting, or sculpture, or something more experimental like performance art, body art, or installation art. 4) Write a 3 page analysis of the art work you select. The paper should have a short introduction and conclusion, but the body should focus on your analysis of the art work. Some of the questions that you might want to work through in the paper many include: Why is the work important? In what ways does it challenge the viewer? Is there an allegorical meaning to the work? How is it in dialogue with Western art traditions or earlier Chinese art traditions? Does it engage with Chinese history? Etc. 5) Be sure to cut and paste an image of the work selected into your paper (or a hyperlink if it is a video). 6) The written version is due on March 9 at noon, and some students will have the opportunity to present their work in class or discussion section.
