Ethics In Research

Ethics in Research

Your written response to this discussion prompt assesses your ability to examine ethical guidelines for conducting action research in the education profession. This discussion also supports your achievement of Course Learning Outcomes 1 and 2.

Think back to the courses you have taken that have given you a perspective on co-teaching and collaboration, the sharing of knowledge with fellow faculty, and using face-to-face, virtual, and blended communications. In essence, a PLC consists of individuals with an interest in the same profession. The focus of a PLC in the education field can be taking measures to ensure students learn, creating a culture of collaboration in the school, school improvement, and more (DuFour, 2004).

As an education professional, you have been selected by the local university to advise them regarding the creation of an IRB for action research proposals. More specifically, as an education professional you have been selected to participate with a group of other professionals to inform and persuade the local university of why the incorporation of an IRB is of utmost importance.

To start off this discussion, first view the Belmont Report, Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research (Links to an external site.).

  • Next, working in your mock PLC ( identified in the Working Together to Support Collaboration Discussion)  come up with a supported argument based on personal experiences and scholarly literature, including Chapter 4 of the Mertler (2014) text, in which you defend why creation of an IRB board is needed at the local university As you formulate your response keep in mind these key concepts ( respect for persons, benefice, and justice, informed consent, assessment of risk and selection of subjects). Discuss the purpose of creating an IRB. Highlight how the IRB is a way to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to protect the rights and welfare of humans participating as subjects in the research especially in regards to special populations.
  • Discuss how the implementation of an IRB body will be established to protect the rights and welfare of human research subjects recruited to participate in research activities conducted under the auspices of the institution with which it is affiliated.

* Note in your Week Three Working Together to Support Collaboration, Discussion you identified each member of your group and which of the bulleted points listed in this discussion each member of the group will be working on.

Collaboration With Families

Zoe is a second grader with autism spectrum disorders. Zoe’s father recently passed away in a tragic car accident.  Zoe, her mom, and two older brothers have temporarily relocated from out-of-state and are now living in her grandparents’ house in a small, rural community.

Because the family had been living out-of state, Zoe has never interacted with her grandparents. She has challenges responding to social cues, including her name and in understanding gestures.  She also engages in repetitive body movements.  She is fond of her set of dolls and likes lining them up.  When Zoe is agitated, her mother plays Mozart, which seems to have a calming effect.  Zoe also enjoys macaroni and cheese.

Her grandparents do not understand Zoe’s attempts at communicating.  Zoe does not respond well to crowded and noisy environments. Zoe’s mom is working outside the home for the first time.

Because of the move, Zoe has transferred to a new school, which does not currently have any students with ASD. Although her mom is generally very involved with Zoe’s education, she is away from the home much of the time due to a long commute for her new job is a neighboring city.

Zoe’s grandparents are eager and willing to help in any way they can.

Imagine you are serving as an ASD consultant at Zoe’s new school. Using the COMPASS model, create a COMPASS Action Plan for Zoe by complete the following tasks:

  1. Identify the personal challenges for Zoe;
  2. Identify the environmental challenges for Zoe;
  3. Identify potential supports; and
  4. Identify and prioritize teaching goals.

In addition, include a 250-500-word rationale that explains how your action plan for Zoe demonstrates collaboration in a respectful, culturally responsive way while promoting understanding, resolving conflicts, and building consensus around her interventions.

The importance of individual and group guidance in the development of children ages Birth to Pre-K.

As an educator, what you do to guide young children into initiating their own development and learning is crucial.

For this assignment, create a 1-2 page newsletter to give to the parents at your Birth to Pre-K center. Consider GCU’s Statement on the Integration of Faith and Work that states, “Therefore, we are assured that our work within the world matters to God and our neighbors, and that we honor God by serving others in ways that promote human flourishing, as you introduce yourself and tell the families a little about yourself in the newsletter and discuss the importance of child-initiated development and learning particular to children from Birth through Pre-K.

In addition, discuss what you, their child’s educator, will do to guide the young children into initiating their own development and learning. Be sure to include in the discussion the following:

  1. The importance of individual and group guidance in the development of children ages Birth to Pre-K.
  2. Problem-solving techniques that help young children develop supportive relationships.
  3. Strategies to facilitate child-initiated development and learning.

Support your findings with 3-5 scholarly resources
