Explain why nutrition is important for child development, and how it has evolved within the family unit.

One of the things that impact a child’s overall development is nutrition.

Explain why nutrition is important for child development, and how it has evolved within the family unit. Apply this concept to the lifestyle of busy parents and the impact it has had on the child, and within the family. How has the food industry responded?  How has our government responded?  How have schools responded both with what they serve students and also what they teach students?

Part two-

How does infectious disease and immunizations impact a child’s health? What concerns should parents have? How do parents evaluate false claims, and what is the impact of false claims?

In our society, both gender and peer groups play a vital role in the developing child’s life.

Please talk about how gender roles influence the developing child, cognitively, physically, and social/emotionally.  Is gender biological or is it influenced by society? Are people born gay? What about trans? What sources can you cite to defend your statements?

Peer groups, particularly in middle childhood and adolescence are often greatly influenced by and formed around gender. What is the importance of a peer group? How does being involved in one (or not) impact growth and development in all the domains? [Cognitive, physical, and social/emotional] What sources can you cite to defend your statements?

Explain students’ needs and abilities through the stages of development

Imagine you’ve been asked to present at a conference on teaching strategies for addressing individual learner needs and curriculum assessments. Many new teachers will be attending, and your insight will be valuable to them for teaching in today’s diverse classroom.

Create a 12- to 14-slide presentation, with detailed speaker notes, that addresses the following:

  • Explain students’ needs and abilities through the stages of development. Reference models put forth by Piaget, Erikson, Kohlberg, and Maslow in your explanation.
  • Explain multiple intelligences, learning style preferences, and the influences these theories have on the ways teachers plan and deliver concepts to elementary school-age children.
  • Explain teaching strategies that can be effective in working with students of different abilities and disabilities.
  • Describe the main types of curricula and provide examples of each.
  • Connect the ideas you have presented on cognitive and psychosocial development, individual learner needs, and learning styles to curriculum planning strategies based on these factors.
  • Discuss the role of assessment. What are some challenges in assessing students’ learning? What might be solutions to some of those challenges?
  • Examine how technology and current teaching tools fit into and can potentially help support teaching based on professional, philosophical, ethical, and core state standards for diverse student populations.
  • Recommend strategies for teaching diversity as a part of the curriculum for students in different stages of cognitive development.

Use one of the following tools to develop your presentation:

  • Google Slides
  • Microsoft PowerPoint

You may use other applications to create your presentation as long as your submission is in .pptx (Microsoft PowerPoint) format.

Write a brief paragraph on a separate document that explains why you chose your tool(s) of choice in creating your presentation. Describe what you liked and/or did not like about the tool.

The Danger Of A Single Story

In her brilliant TED Talk The Danger of a Single Story Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie lets her audience in on a important observation…

She says,

Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, BUT stories can also be used to empower and humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people. BUT stories can also repair that broken dignity.

As we take this 8-week journey together part of my goal as your professor and facilitator will be for all of us to consider our personal Stories as well as the Stories we’ve been told and believe about communicating inside and outside of our respective cultures. If there is one defining point of Chapter 1 – 2 it is to help us realize that a) we are a part of a globalized ever changing multicultural world b) the primary ingredient is human communication – something we all do, and finally c) cultural differences like gender roles, group orientation, aging and social skills influence our personal, familial and community perspectives.

As I stated in our syllabus, “each of us has been socialized in different ways over the course of our lives. We have been taught the “correct” behavior from our families, communities, and various other relational connections.” For each of us, this socialization affects who we are and how we behave more than we realize. We have to begin with ourselves to unpack how we view our own Intercultural behaviors and competencies.

To begin this week’s discussion:

1) View Chimamanda,  The Danger of a Single Story (Links to an external site.) (https://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_ngozi_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story?utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare

2) After you view her TED Talk read through chapter 1 – 3 and consider one concluding discussion of “culture in human behavior.” The authors’ observe even though, “culture is an instrumental variable in human interaction” there can be problems. As such, they offer four caveats to clarify the link between culture and communication. From your personal perspective how do the four caveats (see specifically chapter 1) help you understand culture in human behavior?

3) Finally, use the Danger of a Single Story to explain how Chimamanda acknowledges that we can get both culture and the communication of culture wrong? What is an example she offers of the problems with a single story?
