Why might a healthcare provider be reluctant to discuss the development of this condition with the patient and family?

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (C.M.S.) began phasing in its value-based purchasing program in 2007. Value based purchasing links payment directly to the quality of care provided. It is one strategy being used by C.M.S. to transform the current payment system by rewarding providers for delivering high quality, efficient clinical care.

There are three aspects to the program: patient experience, hospital-acquired conditions and achievement of expected treatment for specific clinical diagnoses.

Select one of the following hospital-acquired conditions:

1. Surgical site infection

2. Pressure Ulcers

3. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections

4. Harm related to falls

For your Final Paper:

1. Include a brief discussion of the chosen hospital-acquired condition and why it is considered preventable.

2. Explain the legal implications related to a patient developing the condition and the role that disclosure plays.

3. Describe accreditation expectations related to this condition.

4. Analyze the outcomes of continuous quality monitoring consider cost as it relates to quality.

The following questions and/or topics should be utilized in the development of your Final Paper:

Hospital acquired conditions:

1. What is meant by the term “hospital acquired condition”?

2. Is the condition you selected always preventable? Why or why not?

3. How does reducing or preventing this condition indicate quality healthcare practices?

Legal implications:

1. What role does communication between the healthcare team and the patient/family play in preventing this condition?

2. Why might a healthcare provider be reluctant to discuss the development of this condition with the patient and family?

3. What are the potential ramifications of not discussing the development of this condition with the patient and family?

4. How might members of the healthcare team present this information to the patient and family?

5. What, if any, is the link between disclosure and litigation?

Accreditation expectations:

1. The Joint Commission accredits 82{0e601fc7fe3603dc36f9ca2f49ef4cd268b5950ef1bbcf1f795cc00e94cdd119} of the hospitals in the United States. (Sollecito & Johnson, 2013, p. 516).

2. What expectations does the Joint Commission have with regards to the condition you selected?

3. How is it assessed by surveyors during an accreditation survey?

Outcomes related to cost and quality:

1. What continuous quality improvement strategies might you use to involve members of the healthcare team in planning and implementing improvements related to this issue?

2. Provide examples for each of the following performance improvement levels: localized improvement, organizational learning, process reengineering, and evidence-based medicine. (Refer to page 5 in your text if needed.)

3. What role does education, research, collaboration, information technology, leadership, and teamwork play in addressing this issue?

4. Of the strategies listed which one do you believe would generate the best outcomes and cost the least to implement? Explain your opinion.

The Final Paper must be eight-to ten-pages (excluding title and references pages) and should demonstrate understanding of the reading assignments, class discussions, your own research and the application of new knowledge. Your paper must use a minimum of six scholarly, peer-reviewed sources from the Ashford University Library that were published within the past five years and that are referenced according to APA guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

What are potency and efficacy, and how are they different?

Addiction m2a1 discussion

Potency and efficacy are two of the most misunderstood concepts in the area of drug use. Many overdoses occur because the potency of the newly purchased drug is higher than that of the previously used drug. These concepts apply to drugs of abuse as well as over-the-counter medications.

Steven has a headache. He reaches for some pain relievers in his medicine cabinet. He finds two bottles: acetaminophen (325 mg) and ibuprofen (200 mg). The instructions for the acetaminophen say take 2 tablets
(650 mg total). The instructions for the ibuprofen say take 2 tablets (400 mg total). Steven assumes that because the dose is higher for the acetaminophen, it must work better.

To assist Steven with making an educated decision about which medication to take, complete the following:

  • What are potency and efficacy, and how are they different?
  • What other factors might influence Steven’s decision?

Write your initial response in 200-300  words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

In this assignment, please consider the meanings of and differences in the concepts of potency and efficacy. Use scholarly definitions of both terms, cited and referenced using APA, as you address the required elements of this discussion. Remember, potency is about strength, and efficacy is about effect. Use your text and information on this site. There is an interesting slide presentation created by the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (n.d.) for more technical information!

While you write this discussion, you might want to consider any personal experiences you or loved ones have had. Please feel free to share these experiences if you would like!

The types of work professionals in specialty areas within the larger field of psychology do

WEEK 1

1) The types of work professionals in specialty areas within the larger field of psychology do

Developmental Psychologists study the intellectual, physical, and emotional development of adolescents and adults. One particular area of study would be Gerontologists, which is particularly interested in developmental changes because of age additionally the population change. Another would be applied developmental psychologists which focus solving problems in everyday settings. (Kuther, 2013) Personality psychologist aim to treat issues pertaining to an individual’s personality. This is done thru the study of personality traits. This sis so they can help a person organize hour they process information. This could be mental health counselor or clinical social worker.

2) The type and level of education one must achieve to work in those specialty areas

You can become a gerontology aide with just a bachelor’s degree. For an applied developmental psychologists you are required to obtain a graduate degree, a doctorate, and a license. Educational requirements to become a personality psychologist require a doctoral degree and in addition you are required to meet internship requirements also which is typically about 2 years. Once you meet internship hours you can then apply to be licensed.

3) A description of work settings and average incomes one can expect in careers within the specialty areas.

Median salary for a gerontology aide is gerontology aide is $44,000

Median salary for an applied developmental psychologists is $72,000

Median salary for a personality psychologist is $67,880

4) Whether after researching the areas you find them to be career possibilities you are interested in or careers that don’t capture your interest and why

Gerontology Aide is something that would intrests me because I would prefer to have direct contact with the people I intend to help. (Kuther, 2013) Providing activities and events that will help raise the quality of life of the seniors would be very fulfilling. The downside to that is it is the book suggests it is mainly focused on the elderly community and I have worked in a nursing home previously and it was a very tough environment. Also anecdotal notes can sometimes be very difficult for me because I have yet to fully grasp observational notes without applying personal opinion.

Applied Development is focused on diagnosing learning disability and developmental delays and then implementing prevention and progression plans. Which can minimize medication interventions which is something that I like. (Kuther, 2013) Working with other professionals to help someone show progress would be very enjoyable. The downfall to this is that it is very fast paced with and focused within areas such as hospital well continued interventions with the same individuals may be minimized.

5) A description of the most interesting thing not previously known that you learned about the specialty areas

Previous to this week I had never heard of a gerontology aide. By doing this week’s assignment I have been introduced to something I can do will just a bachelors that pays a decent median wage while I continue to progress my educational experience and obtaining my internships hours. But ultimately my goal is to become a BCBA or ABA which would lean more towards the information I learned about applied developmental psychologists.

6) A description of an everyday and real-world human experience related to two pod-casts you select to listen to on the specialty web pages provided

I live with my grandfather he is 87 has bone cancer and also dementia. While I’m at work there is a care provider that takes care of him. When I come home from work every day he has to be reminded that I have only been gone for about nine hours because he always thinks I have been gone a lot longer. Additionally he has begun to call his sons by the opposites name although he still knows the difference when he sees there face this can serve to be a big challenge because I’m not really sure which son he is referring to. My grandfather has often times become violent and about three weeks ago he grabbed the steering wheel on the way to the doctors because he thought I was trying to take him to Mexico. Although he is can become very agitated he also doesn’t remember what he has done soon after which makes things difficult to deal with sometimes. This is important because the podcast I choose that I listened to “Dementia: When “Living in the Moment” is Not A Good Thing” I could directly relate too. Also another podcast I found interesting was “How Do You Really Raise Self-Esteem? The Incredible vs. American Idol” This is important to me because I struggle from PTSD and anxiety and a lot of my stress as been suggested to be associated to my self-esteem being crushed by my ex-wife.

7) A description of a “Hot Topic that fits with what you know about each specialty area after researching it and how the two are related.

A hot topic that I would use applied developmental psychologists for is bullying. These two things are directly connected because the specialty focuses on practical situations and uses real life settings to find solutions. Typically bullying is an impulse response which with behavior interventions can be modified and corrected. At the same time bullying can be addressed by personality psychologists because they focus on finding out what is making a person do a particular thing such as social norms and then provide goals to change it by attempting to use behavior modification techniques.
