The Session Long Project entails you going through the process of influencing policymakers. Review the Oklahoma Rehabilitation Council Advocacy Toolbox. Read the “Writing to government officials or lobbyists” and the “Opposing a Proposal” and the “Supporting a Proposal” sample letters. Additionally, read “Changing public opinion” for this assignment.

  1. Using the same topic from SLP 1( Teenage Pregnancy), identify the level you wish to write to (local, state, or national).
  2. For this SLP assignment, choose whether you will be writing on “opposing a proposal” or “supporting a proposal.”
  3. Choose three key elements from “Changing public opinion” page and discuss how these elements relate to influencing policymakers (one paragraph).
  4. Discuss the role of collaboration in health communication and advocacy.
  5. Write a one-page letter, that encompasses the information from the above 3 bullets (on “opposing a proposal” or “supporting a proposal”).

As mentioned in “How Not To Die” and actually in many of the videos we have been watching, it informs us that many diseases and health issues don’t have to be cured by doctors on a surgery table or by prescription medicine given to us. In fact, many health issues that humans develop can be reversed by eating a plant based diet. Meat has a lot of heme iron and other harmful qualities which can cause an increase in cancer risks. The body can only handle a certain amount of protein before it can no longer break it down in your colon. This can turn into colon cancer down the road. Meat and dairy products can also build plaque in your arteries which can eventually give you a heart attack, stroke, or high blood pressure. Meat and diary consumption come with big risks to our health. However, the nutrition guidelines that should be informing the public about all this, don’t want to because they don’t want to “upset” the public. The health guidelines were going to let it be known that meat consumption should go down by a lot, but these meat companies made it a point to get that line excluded and even to have the group who thought of this disbanded (Gregor, pg 27). Michael Gregor has also mentioned in chapter 1 that many companies such as McDonald’s and other food companies paid a lot of money to be included in the health guidelines (Gregor, pg 27). Therefore, money and making a profit was and continues to be more important in this capitalistic society, than the health of its public. Therefore, this one of the many barriers that helps prevent many citizens from adopting a plant based diet. Many people aren’t informed of a better way, and even if they were they are already so knee deep in these unhealthy eating habits, that they probably wouldn’t want to anyway.

When approaching issues related to monetary impact, it is important to note that economics does not work in public health the way that it does in business. This is because businesses are regulated by the nature of supply and demand. Typically, the more demand there is for a product, the higher the price. If there is less demand, either the price will likely reduce or the product will be taken off the market. In public health, this is not the case. The cost of an intervention may or may not increase due to a higher demand. Likewise, the production or implementation of interventions may not decrease due to low profit margins. For example, even though pharmaceutical companies made little to no money producing influenza vaccines, regulatory and governmental bodies can mandate that these companies continue production for the common good of the general public.

In this Discussion, you conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis to determine the feasibility of interventions, which you identified in your ”Conducting Research” assignment for your Scholar Practitioner Project. As you approach this Discussion, it is critical to remember that public health economics is not about making a profit. Rather, it is about the allocation of budgetary resources as a means to promote long-term savings and positive health outcomes. As you conduct your cost-effectiveness analysis, ask yourself the following questions:

  • How economically feasible is the intervention?
  • What are the long-term savings of the intervention?
  • How do the potential health outcomes outweigh the costs of the intervention?

To prepare for this Discussion, conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis on the one current and one alternative intervention identified in your “Conducting Research” assignment for your Scholar Practitioner Project. Based on this analysis, consider the costs associated with and health outcomes of implementing each. Refer to Chapter 3 of your course text to assist you in conducting your analysis.

Then, relying on what you’ve learned from the background readings and other credible sources, identify and briefly describe one way that the issue can be addressed from a standpoint of health promotion (e.g. creating an environment conducive to health) and/or health education.
