Question description

Review the prompt and the classmates discussion post. Respond to discussion post.

Prompt:

This “age of improvement” held both a collective (public) component and an individual (private) component. That is, the impulse for reform aimed at improving American society by elevating the moral behavior of individual Americans. Discuss this process by examining the various reform movements that defined the age. How did this impulse for reform seek to impact the broader political, cultural, and economic landscape of American society? When responding to your peers, discuss what the reformers hoped to accomplish. What impact did their efforts have?

Discussion Post:

Change was made to improve American society by elevating the moral behavior of individual Americans. Reforms helped shape America. The economic development of the time meant that there were problems that needed solutions. “Troubled by the pains and dislocations of sudden expansion, cities were especially ripe for moral crusades.”[1] Some of these reforms included public education, women’s suffrage, and health.

Most of the American people who were involved in reform, were regular citizens, not leaders.[2] Hundreds of thousands of people were involved in many causes. Many were involved in more than one cause. Men argues that anything more than a 10-hour work day was hazardous to their health. The Working Men’s party were insistent on the need for free public education.[3] Public education would be able to educate journeymen to be able to become masters, employers, and petty capitalists.[4] Equal rights definition did not include women or African Americans. The American Hydropathic Society, which helped [provide a new stage in health reform, endorsed medical training for women who many considered it a sisterhood, not to mention an escape from their families. The effects of health reform helped promote exercise and fresh air and had an impact on the development of school systems. William Andrus Alcott, who favored health reform, promoted the idea that student needed to practice good hygiene, exercise, and be taught the elements of good health.[5]

Health care professionals are poised to lead the national movement toward improving public health

Please do a paragraph about this post with this instruction .

post most have 4 or more sentences .

you also have to have a high quality post from a content perspective. This means it also needs to do more than agree with or praise a class mate. If you agree with a classmate, explain why, give an example, share what you learned in the readings

It appears there are currently five nurses who are currently serving in Congress. The very first nurse to be elected into Congress was Eddie Bernice Johnson. She is currently serving her 11th term representing the 30th Congressional District of Texas. She is originally from Texas and served as a Chief Psychiatric Nurse at the VA Hospital in Dallas before she was elected. Last year, Johnson was involved in reintroducing The National Nurse Act, which would appoint a nurse-leader position to work alongside of the Surgeon General. The person elected into this position would, “…collaborate with health care leaders to address health disparities, set goals to improve the health of Americans, and raise the profile of the entire U.S. Public Health Service” (Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, 2015). She believes this position is very important because the health care reform aims for health promotion and disease prevention, which is largely a part of the Public Health Service’s general goal and responsibility.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the 30thdistrict of Texas. Congresswoman studied nursing at St. Mary’s College at the University of Notre Dame. After advancing her education and receiving a master’s degree, Congresswoman Johnson is the first nurse to be elected to the United States Congress.

Specific bills that have been supported by Congresswoman Johnson are as follows:

H.R.5475-Health Equity and Accountability Act of 2016-although this bill was recently proposed, Congresswoman Johnson is interested in improving the health of minority individuals. This bill specifically targets many areas such as data collection and reporting, health workforce diversity, and improvement of health care services.

H.R.2646- Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act of 2015- this bill has created programs that are extended and training is available which will allow mental health education to expand. Additionally, evidenced based interventions and the best available science into systems of care are utilized. There is also liability protection for professional volunteers within the mental health work field

When you have nurses in leadership positions, such as in Congress, the ability for all nurses’ voices and concerns have a better chance of being heard. Johnson believes that since nurses make up the largest profession in healthcare, their concerns and ideas are valid as far as the improvement towards the health status of this country. “Health care professionals are poised to lead the national movement toward improving public health, and the National Nurse for Public Health would provide the uniting voice and leadership to do so” (Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, 2015). So far the National Nurse Act has only been introduced to the House. It still needs to pass the House, pass the Senate, and then be signed into law by the President.

Overall, having a nurse in an elected position creates opportunity for growth and further development of bills and advocacy for all involved.

Determinants of Health

Week 1: Determinants of Health

What are some factors that make some people healthy and others ill? Healthy People 2020 identifies five determinants of health that influence the health of individuals and populations. Healthy People 2020 describes them as “a range of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health status” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2014, About Determinants of Health, para. 1). Determinants fall into five categories including: (a) policy making, (b) social factors, (c) health services, (d) individual behavior, and (e) biology and genetics.
