Research suggests a number of strategies to reduce intergroup conflict. To further explore these strategies, in addition to readings in your text, read the following article paying particular attention to pages 588 to 593. Hewstone, M., Rubin, M., & Willis, H. You are a counselor in a detention center for delinquent adolescent boys. Your current project is to devise a way to reduce intergroup conflict that has been escalating between the boys at the center, many of whom were active in local gangs.

  • Discuss in detail the concepts that lead to the intergroup conflict, such as stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. How have these attitudes and behaviors created and perpetuated the ongoing conflict?
  • Discuss the different strategies to reduce intergroup conflict found in your text and the Hewstone article.
  • Looking back at the course discuss 2 to 3 additional concepts that could be applied in helping a person overcome these negative attitudes and behaviors.
  • Keeping these strategies and concepts in mind, what activities and/or programs can you create that will help these boys overcome this conflict and learn to work together, respect each other, and come to see each other’s differences as valuable. Briefly summarize each program/strategy in 2 to 3 sentences each in preparation for part 2 of this project.

Answer the above points in a 3- to 4-page paper. Your paper should be double-spaced, typed in 12-point Times New Roman font with normal one-inch margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page.

Part 2:

Create a 4- to 8-slide PowerPoint presentation (not including title and reference slides) to present to the board of directors for the detention center that will cover the following:

  • A detailed outline of each of the 3 to 4 programs/strategies that you would like to put into place at the center.
  • Discuss for each program/strategy why you believe it will be effective within the context of your detention center.

What question did you hope to answer by completing this literature review paper? Explain the practical implications of the conclusions of the literature review and the audience to which they are directed.

ssignment 1: LASA # 2: PowerPoint Presentation

Utilizing the information you compiled for your literature review paper, and the feedback you received from your instructor about the literature review, prepare a 10-15 minute Power Point presentation on your topic, summarizing the key points and conclusions. Be sure to direct this presentation to an audience in the community. For example, if your paper pertained to a topic in developmental psychology, direct your presentation toward parents, or a parenting center. If your topic pertained to substance abuse, direct it toward a community service agency which may use this information for educating teens or parents about preventing drug use, or current clients about treatments and facilities available. Please state in your presentation the specific audience toward whom your presentation is aimed. Include a reference page in APA format, as well as speaker notes and an audio file with your presentation.

Your slides should provide answers to the following questions:

What was your topic?

What question did you hope to answer by completing this literature review paper? Explain the practical implications of the conclusions of the literature review and the audience to which they are directed.

Given the results of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? In other words, which of those is supported by the existing evidence? Be sure to include full coverage of the arguments, including strengths and weaknesses of each of them, supported by your findings from reviewing the relevant articles.

Did the researchers consider multicultural factors in their studies? If not, what factors may be involved? What multicultural factors should future studies include?

What ethical issues are related to your topic and/or discussed in the studies you reviewed?

How do the conclusions of your literature review relate to the various specialization areas in psychology? Tie them to as many as apply from the following areas: biological, cognitive, developmental, social, personality theory, psychopathology, and applied psychology.

How can the conclusions of your literature review inform the population towards whom your presentation is directed? How can they apply this information to their daily lives? What advice or ‘take home message’ can you provide to your audience based on the research you reviewed?

What research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of study?

Why is your research question important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic?

Your presentation should also follow these guidelines:

It should be approximately 10-15 minutes in length.

It should be clear, concise, and professional.  Writing should be free of spelling and grammatical errors; it should conform to current APA style (including any in-text citations).

It should include graphs, tables, figures, or images illustrating your ideas.

There should be a final slide listing references in current APA style.

The bulk of the text should be placed in the Notes pages of each slide. Keep the amount of text on the slide, itself, to a minimum.

You should record an audio file of your oral presentation. You should also type the text of the speech you would give while showing these slides to an audience should be typed into the Notes area.  If you are unable to use the audio feature, the Notes text will suffice.

Your task is to generate (at least) 5 theory-based, constructive criticisms of the selected communication (which could be an ad, a web page, a single coupon, price promotion, or cause-related marketing promotion). What are some other traits that students in junior high may be broken into? Can you think of ethical concerns with these groupings also?

Dr. Cortez is interested in the differences between both popular and unpopular children, especially in junior high school. She has developed a way to distinguish children as either popular or unpopular and is currently conducting research in the local junior high schools. She grouped the students by popularity (the students didn’t know which group they were in or what the study was actually about) and then having a class for the popular students and a separate class for the unpopular students. Dr. Cortez is looking forward to the implications of the study because she feels as though the idea of being popular or unpopular is the basis for so many problems in junior high school. She feels as though students that are considered popular do better academically than those students considered unpopular. Therefore, if the students are in the correct class the teacher can teach them accordingly.  Along the same lines, the unpopular students are grouped together and therefore can form friendships with students that are similar to them and then they won’t suffer teasing or other social problems. Dr. Cortez has the students in the senior Education classes, who read the study.

  1. What are some ethical concerns about Dr. Cortez’s study?
  2. What are some other traits that students in junior high may be broken into? Can you think of ethical concerns with these groupings also?

Dr. Cortez’s research is in social psychology and so her participants are usually groups. What advice could a clinical psychologist give her based on the clinical psychologist’s views of people as Dr. Bowen’s research in the past couple of years has focused on programs geared at getting students to abstain from using drugs. Her program involves the local police taking prisoners to the middle schools. These prisoners are incarcerated for drug possession or dealing. The prisoners speak to the students on the danger of getting involved with drug use. Dr. Bowen has tried several times to get her research published, but to no avail. She has posted her research on her own website. Some schools have shown interest in the program she developed. They have even decided to implement her program into their school system.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Why do you think Dr. Bowen’s research may have been rejected by the journals?
  2. Can you think of a problem with the school system implementing the program into their school system even though it has not been published?
  3. Put yourself on the school board for one of the school systems. What would you do and what advice would you give to the other school board members?
