Explain what strategies and interventions for addressing this urban health problem

The following is what you should consider for this assessment component:
a) Report Title – should include the health issue, target population group and the area. London or New York based papers should look at the boroughs; elsewhere you can just look at the whole city as one study unit.

b) Introduction – brief overview of childhood obesity and signposting to show the sections you will include in the work.

c) Rationale of why childhood obesity is an urban health issue – identify and explain the evidence including epidemiological data you will use to show why this is an urban health problem.

d) Explain the urban context and determinants that you will look at to explain the impact on the health issue. Remember to draw on the wider context, including London if you are looking at a London borough.

e) Identify and explain the public health consequences and implications of this urban health problem that impact on the general populations, on the individual and on the health services.

f) Explain what strategies and interventions for addressing this urban health problem you will critique in the paper.

g) What recommendations and conclusions you expect to make?

The effect of social context on mental health

Question 2

This question carries 25% of the marks for this assignment and assesses module learning outcomes KU2, KU4, CS2 and KS1.

In Book 3, you were provided with the DSM-IV-TR criteria for substance dependence. It was noted that these criteria were for addictions that arise as a consequence of intake of a substance, normally a drug, rather than behavioural addictions.

In May 2013, the new edition of the DSM was introduced, the DSM-5. In this edition there have been a number of changes to the section entitled ‘Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders’. One of the most notable changes is described in the quote below:

‘An important departure from past diagnostic manuals is that the substance-related disorders chapter has been expanded to include gambling disorder. This change reflects the increasing and consistent evidence that some behaviours, such as gambling, activate the brain reward system with effects similar to those of drugs of abuse and that gambling disorder symptoms resemble substance use disorders to a certain extent.’

  1. The above quote states that there is increasing evidence for behaviours, such as gambling, to activate the brain reward system. Using the material in Book 3, describe what is meant by the brain reward system and how gambling may affect it. (Word limit: 250 words)

(9 marks)

  1. The extract also says that some symptoms or features of gambling disorder resemble those of substance use disorders. Using the examples of Patrick and Robin in the video associated with Activity 1.1 in Book 3 (‘A1’ on the multimedia map) identify four similarities between the experiences of these two individuals. (Word limit: 300 words)

(12 marks)

  1. Using the information in Book 3, briefly comment on whether you think the treatment approaches for gambling addiction support its inclusion in the same section of DSM-5 as substance addictions, and explain your reasoning. (Word limit: 150 words)

Question 3

This question carries 40% of the marks for this assignment and assesses module learning outcomes KU3, CS1 and KS2.

Drawing on information from the text in Books 1–3 write an essay entitled ‘The effect of social context on mental health’.

Identify a model of care that you would use in your work with this person. Provide a brief critique of the evidence base for this model and discuss the model of care in relation to a recovery model of care.

This assignment is to be a maximum length of 2000 words (+ or – 10%).

This assessment task requires you to be able to relate the ‘theory’ covered in this course to your practice. To clearly ground your discussion in clinical practice, prepare a brief overview of a ‘case study’ from your clinical practice.

NB: If you are not currently working in a community setting, choose a ‘case study’ from your clinical practice (e.g. a person you have worked with during their admission to an inpatient unit, who was then discharged to care in the community).

  • Identify a model of care that you would use in your work with this person. Provide a brief critique of the evidence base for this model and discuss the model of care in relation to a recovery model of care.
  • Describe how you would implement this model of care
  • Identify potential barriers/impediments to effectiveness, including:

o Service factors that may interfere with care delivery

o Clinician behaviours, attitudes, assumptions and judgments

o A potential ethical or moral dilemma associated with implementing community based mental health care delivery within a recovery framework

  • Critique options for effectively addressing the barriers/impediments you have identified
  • Include in your discussion the collaborative processes by which you would engage the person and the additional services (e.g. NGO resources, Commonwealth funded programs, carer and family supports, consumer support groups) relevant to the needs of the person.
