What is your reaction to your estimated life expectancy?

Assignment 2: Life Expectancy Questionnaire and Death and Dying—Customs and Beliefs

The first part of the assignment includes an informal assessment of your personal protective and risk factors associated with aging. This type of assessment could also be useful for your future client populations. In addition, you will look at how the response to death and dying varies widely among individuals and cultural groups. This second part of the assignment provides additional awareness and insight into these beliefs and practices.

Part A

  • How do your personal cultural variables contribute to your estimate?

In addition, specify any modifications you plan to make in response to your estimated life expectancy.

Part B

Conduct research to find cultures different from your own in terms of beliefs and practices related to death and dying.

Corporate executive compensation

In this course, you will look at classical ethical theories of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. You will also examine different perspectives on ethical issues introduced by relativism, ethical egoism, and emotivism. For this paper, you will apply these theories and perspectives to a current issue, selected from the list of issues below.

Choose one of the ethical issues from the list below to research and write about. It is recommended that you choose a topic you are familiar with or have thought about previously. For example, you might choose an issue that either worries you or enrages you; you might choose one that you have worked on; or you might choose one that relates to recent events in your community.

Possible Issues

  • Corporate executive compensation
  • Corporate contributions to political campaigns
  • Affirmative action
  • The media and its responsibilities
  • Domestic surveillance
  • Whistle blowing in government or in a business
  • Religion in the workplace
  • Pornography
  • Consumer tracking
  • Ethical problems of gambling
  • Progressive taxation rates
  • Immigration
  • Women’s equality

In your paper, you will apply the ethical theories and perspectives to the issue you select. You do not have to use all six, but you should apply at least two ethical theories and at least one ethical perspective in your paper. Make sure you write primarily on ethical topics and concepts; do not get distracted by doing analyses that apply political, economic, religious, or legal perspectives. Describe, compare, and apply the ethical theories and perspectives to the topics. Explain how the theories and perspectives would analyze the issue. What are the ethical issues? Where are there breaches of ethical behavior? How could each theory help people think about what would constitute virtuous or ethical behavior?

The paper must be eight to ten pages in length (excluding title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least five scholarly sources from the Ashford University Library other than the textbook to support your claims. You can also use the Sociology Research Guide located in the Ashford University Library. Cite your sources within the text of your paper and on the reference page. For information regarding APA, including samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, located within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar in your online course.

The Nature V. Nurture Debate

TEDxUIUC – Gene Robinson – Solving the “Nature vs Nurture” Dilemma
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kONM9WO5LGo

In this Ted Talks video, Dr. Gene Robinson, a department chair and professor at the University of Illinois, discusses the latest findings in the nature vs. nurture debate, including new knowledge about the human genome, highlighting the need to break down the false dichotomy between genes and the environment.

Think about and compare two people you know.  Each one of these two individuals has what you might suspect is a genetic propensity for being a leader.  In other words, you have seen evidence that both of these acquaintances of yours were born with leadership ability.  However, one of your acquaintances has become a leader and the other has not.  What can you identify as the difference, today, between these two personalities?  First share why you think both of them have a genetic temperament to be a leader and then why you think one became a leader and the other did not. What main cause do you believe is the reason that one of them is a leader and the other is not?  Or is there a main cause?  Remember to take into account what Dr. Robinson tells us.

300 word minimum

APA Format

Discuss which social network site would be most appropriate for each example and explain why.

Social media can be a powerful tool to help you get the word out to a wide audience in a relatively short amount of time.

  1. Imagine that you are organizing a fundraiser for a local charity. Explore the various social media outlets discussed in this module or that you are aware of from your own personal and professional use (examples include Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Instagram, etc.).
  2. Compose two announcements advertising the event to be posted on two different social media sites. The first should be geared toward your friends, family, and other social acquaintances. The second should be written for co-workers or professional colleagues or acquaintances.
  3. What types of media would you include in your announcements? Written, photographic, video, or audio? Would the same media be appropriate for both announcements? Where could you get this media? Is it OK to copy whatever clip-art you find on the web? Why or why not? Is it OK to use part of your favorite song? Why or why not?
  4. Discuss which social network site would be most appropriate for each example and explain why. Be sure to include a brief reflection on the differences in tone, style, and content of the two postings in terms of their intended audiences.

Your initial response should be at least 150 words. Each of your follow-up responses should be at least 50 words.

Use properly documented sources outside of this course to justify, support, and expand on your response. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

By Saturday, September 19, 2015, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, September 23, 2015, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.
