Chapter 1: Introduction to the Study
Introduction
The study of mental health in Texas forms its basis on the argument that lack of social connections affects mental health status of people. This paper shall be based on mental health improvement in Texas which is a critical consideration in the current health environment. There have been prevalent social issues that have caused worsening and development of mental health conditions. The most common issues that lead to mental disorders are finances, systemic racism, traumatic events, adverse upbringing, physical or sexual abuse, substance abuse, and lack of emotional support during changes in external environment (Einstein et al., 2017). These factors often result in the affected persons to lack proper wellbeing that would ensure they transform the situations for the better. It is evident that environmental factors form the root of the majority of mental health conditions. This proposal shall identify issues that are linked to rejection and inaccessibility of mental health improvement initiatives.
Einstein et al. (2017) explained that mental illnesses are linked to environmental issues especially when the affected person is constantly exposed to situations that cause anxiety and depression. This paper’s study of mental illnesses in Texas and factors influencing use of mental health improvement initiatives is critical since the state as constantly gotten exposed to changes in its social structure and environmental issues. For instance, the recent pandemic has resulted in the majority of college students developing mental illnesses due to the government measures of social distancing (Taboada, 2020). This is a clear indication that people in Texas suffer mental health issues as they are unable to access required medical improvement initiatives. After discovering presence of mental health issues, the affected persons often reject mental health improvement measures.
The study of mental health in Texas is influenced further by the fact that accessibility of mental health improvement measures is limited in the state (Leonard, 2017). Study of mental health in Texas reveals that “1 in 5 Texans” are exposed to adverse mental health illness every year. The issue of mental health in Texas continues even as the National Alliance on Mental Illness discovered that 110,000 persons in Montgomery County were exposed to mental illnesses (Leonard, 2017). The author further states that schizophrenia or bipolar disorder affect around 23000 persons in Montgomery county only (Leonard, 2017). This indicates that mental health issues are adverse in the state and require study to ensure the creation of solutions that would ensure proper wellbeing of all persons. The statistics for all persons in Texas was approximately more than 500,000 persons in Texas who were living with adverse and recurrent mental health issues.
The main types of mental disorders, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) are “depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychoses, dementia, and developmental disorders” (WHO, 2019). These disorders affect many persons in Texas and become worse when they lack access to healthcare. The most important solution of mental health issues to offer suitable social support and to provide treatment measures that are proven to create effective outcomes. The process of identification of cause of mental health disorders is connected to patients’ cognitive capability (Magaard et al., 2017). This forms a basis of treatment of mental health conditions since the affected persons can identify their need to receive treatment. This would influence their desire to visit mental health providers in order to identify the type of issue and to receive treatment. Issues in mental healthcare develop internal barriers to mental health access that cause them to have worse conditions.
Mental health disorders develop further due to overreliance of positive factors in the environment that do not provide full positive wellbeing for accepted persons. In this era, social media has caused in increase in mental health issues since many people get affected by adverse conditions that lead to inability to realize real stressors that cause them to get mental health issues (Wongkoblap et al., 2017). This paper shall study how intrapersonal issues affect capability of people to recover from mental health issues. The use of social media forms an intrapersonal barrier to mental healthcare access especially when the affected persons form a different reality while using the vast choices of social media platforms (Keles et al., 2019; McLafferty, et al., 2017; McKenzie, et al., 2021). This is an adverse barrier of improvement of healthcare since it becomes difficult to offer improvements based on the prevailing conditions.
The factors influencing mental health improvement are also connected to substance abuse which is an adverse issue that changes cognitive capability of affected person (Kim et al., 2020; Middleton et al., 2018; Mehta & Edwards, 2018). Any type of mental health issue affects people’s normal capacity to identify that they need help. In the case of South Texas, it is imperative to study how mental health conditions have affected local residents and the different government initiatives developed to ensure improvement in all areas. Any type of mental disorder can get considered as a negative issue that can form full incapacitation for affected persons. The fact that environmental issues often develop results in the need to study how mental health improvement can get performed without affecting the possibility of fully treating the condition.
Treatment of mental health disorders is possible by creating a conducive environment, identifying root cause of issues, and selecting a treatment plan that suits the type of patient (Mayo Clinic, 2019). This paper shall create an argument that is linked to mental health improvement requirements to ensure the capability of offering support to persons affected with mental illnesses. Any type of mental health issues has an impact on the affected persons daily operations. The issues worsen as the people lack connection with family members or friends that would enable them to cope with their adverse conditions. This results in the need to create more social awareness for affected persons to ensure they would be able to engage with the proper solutions and professionals that can offer solutions.
Chang et al. (2019) identified that psychological issues often develop as people get exposed to adverse social conditions. The process of detection is critical since it ensures identification of issues that would lead to the proper solution depending on patient conditions. The issue of mental health is strongly connected to any professional environment since it is required to ensure identification of limiting factors that can cause for a person to gain profitable outcomes. The development of personality traits affects possibility of mental health improvement since it is connected to the issue of accessibility by affected persons. The transition between personal factors and mental health improvement requires consideration since it affects normal functioning that has a capability of generating required outcomes for patients.
After studying factors that may lead to development of mental health issues, it is imperative to analyze how people’s desire to access care gets performed. There are certain barriers for mental health improvement that often occur due to limited capability to generate profitable treatments. The most common barriers are financial constraints, inability to reach required destination, age, stigma, social influence, limited literacy about mental health, lack of insurers, inadequate government interventions, and lack of access with professionally trained persons (Smith et al., 2019; Shukla et al., 2020; Shi et al., 2020; Shalaby & Agyapong, 2020). For instance, adolescents find it hard to receive mental health treatment since they are influenced by their peers (Cuddy & Currie, 2020). This is also connected to social influence that is common in all areas of a person’s daily life. Limited desire to mental health improvement often occurs in this way and thus creates more constraints for mental health departments.
There is a discrepancy between mental health improvement initiatives and the desire of targeted persons to engage with the improvement measures (Nyblade et al., 2019). This is dangerous for the health departments and affected persons since it affects their desire to access care. The procedure of identification of a type of mental health issue requires collaboration with the affected person and professionally trained person. Whenever the affected persons lack full confidence in their health provider’s capabilities, it becomes difficult to improve quality of care and to offer the best outcome (Brondani et al., 2017). There are a variety of interventions like emotional support, therapy, and medicine to help affected persons to cope with their issues. Depending on the type of issue mental healthcare providers are involved with the improvement measures that have high likelihood of producing required outcomes.
There is availability of mental healthcare procedures in the current environment the majority of which are proven to produce effective results. This paper shall apply qualitative descriptive method to analyze various factors related to mental health improvement initiatives. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to analyze all factors affecting mental healthcare providers as well as patients and result in limited capability to access required treatment in South Texas. This proposal shall analyze many high quality and peer reviewed articles that got developed during study of mental healthcare improvement. The fact that there are scholars who are involved in the study results in the need to study different articles and to a perform a synthesis that would connect are required topics. This study shall form a basis for any mental health department.
In Texas, there are a million adults that suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, emotional disturbance, and depression (Piedad, 2017). This depicts how adverse the mental health department is and the need to create effective outcomes. The data got studied in 2017 alone and the figures have been increasing as economies change and there becomes a need to utilize available healthcare department knowledge. The availability of healthcare providers and the desire of people to receive suitable care have always been concerning factors that influence proper healthcare improvement in the state. The facts that have been mentioned result in the need to study how health improvement can get conducted without reducing ability to generate the expected outcome.
This study shall base the argument on reputable organizations that have conducted mental health improvement initiatives in Texas. The Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) has closely been linked to mental health improvement as it possesses the required funds for studying the sector. A survey got conducted in 2020 on the United States Census Bureau and it was discovered that Texas had 40.1% of its residents reporting that they experienced depression and anxiety issues during the pandemic (KFF, 2020). This is a clear indication that the study ought to get conducted in order to develop the suitable outcomes for affected persons. Adults were more adversely affected according to 2020 data since 21.4% of them reported they could access required therapy for the mental illness issues (KFF, 2020). In this regard, the mental health department requires connection with all affected persons to determine ways of improving their output.
This paper shall study how mental healthcare improvement is possible by connecting with affected persons and offering them the appropriate care. Chapter 2 of this study is based on the literature review which is vast and contains a lot of critical data linked to the mental health department. The cited materials shall get discussed and then synthesis performed to generate required knowledge improvement related to the healthcare department. Chapter 3 of this study shall contain data related to the methodology plan associated with this study. This shall offer the guidance of implementation of the majority of topics developed in the chapter 2 literature review section.

Background of the Study
The research that needs to be understood is how mental health gets affected by external factors surrounding each person that is mentally ill. There are many peer reviewed articles based on mental health improvement which affects many persons some of which do not disclose their conditions. The issue of mental health affects many people since it not only affects the person diagnosed with mental health issues but also affects the persons who interact with the mentally ill person (USHH, 2017). Mental health occurs in an intrapersonal perspective whereby the affected person has inability to function properly and then they get affected by issues in their external environment. This often occurs when the affected person gets exposed to adverse situations that impair their capability of functioning properly.
Expounding on the intrapersonal issues of mental health is imperative since it reveals how affected persons can reject any efforts of improving their mental health conditions. Mental health issues affect normal physical functioning since it becomes difficult for the affected persons to put focus on their physical wellbeing (Ohrnberger et al., 2017). Whenever a person interacts with improper social background the resulting effects is negative social, economic, biological, and lifestyle factors (Ohrnberger et al., 2017). The issues progress due to limited capability to separate adverse interactions with the impact they would have on affected persons. Exposure to mental illnesses often results in incapacitation on the part of the affected person to think of ways to improve their statuses. The issues have been increasing recently as the environment changed.
Ohrnberger et al. (2017) explained further about the intrapersonal issues of mental illness whereby people get affected due socio-economic conditions that result in lack of capability to access required resources. The feeling of loneliness often develops as the affected persons sink deeper into depression due to lack of financial independence. Once the affected persons realize they are incapable of being self-sustaining they often get exposed to rejection of mental health improvement initiatives since they do not see the need to access care. Feelings of depression and anxiety develop more as the affected person’s brain gets used to negative environment. Ohrnberger et al. (2017) explained that loneliness develops due to limited capability of engaging with mental health improvement initiatives. In this perspective, intrapersonal issues develop due to mental health requirements that are often highly demanding for people who have no capability of accessing care.
Ohrnberger et al. (2017) further explained that issues of mental health result in an affected person lacking the capability of realizing positive health improvement measures. Mental issues develop as the affected persons engage in substance abuse to manage their negative conditions. The common issues include too much alcohol intake, and drug use (Ohrnberger et al., 2017). The mentally ill persons find themselves getting addicted to substances since they lack capability of realizing that the substances provide only a temporary relief. This action results in rejection of mental health improvement measures since the persons get addicted and cannot realize that they need to change their wellbeing. The lack of social interactions also results in limited capability of accessing health care since it becomes difficult to balance the negative conditions with required health improvement measures.
From an interpersonal perspective, mental illness develops and worsens due to limited capability of affected persons to engage with people that can produce positive outcomes in them. This perspective requires study of interaction between mentally ill people and their peers, professional colleagues, families, and mental healthcare providers. The interpersonal perspective of mental health issues requires more study since it is one the basis of mental health issues of a vast community. There are issues connected to health requirements whereby the affected persons lack a capability of generating the required health improvement measures. It is often difficult for some mentally ill persons perceive their need to improve due to the inability to connect with highly trained persons (Garcia et al., 2020). This is detrimental since it is difficult for a sick person to realize that they have a problem that can get solved.
The interpersonal perspective of mental health issues results in the need to find a method of studying how mental health providers have an impact on their patients’ wellbeing. Any health improvement initiative requires to get studied by professional persons since they would have received training that can improve their health outcomes.
The interpersonal study of mental health improvement measures requires study of how different persons get affected by their social interactions. The issue of stigma often affects the capability of mentally ill people to realize the adversity of their issues and to receive treatment that is effective and suitable to them (Gaiha et al., 2020; Paul et al., 2018; Patino & Ferreira, 2018). The issue often causes rejection as the mentally ill persons become afraid to reveal their weaknesses to other people. Interpersonal issues often develop as mentally ill persons find it difficult to access care when they use technology to form connection that are not always positive. This usually occurs due to use of smartphones and social media which result in limited capability to form positive face to face encounters (Bauer et al., 2020). The issue of rejection develops further in this way.
Interpersonal issues often cause development of mental health issues since it is difficult for any person to function well when they are constantly exposed to negative environments. There are issues that develop such as anxiety and depression when an employed person constantly gets exposed to rude and unprofessional employees (Tricco et al., 2018; Pascoe et al., 2019; Packness et al., 2019). Issues such as bullying, workplace conflicts, and negative relationships develop and can have detrimental effect on the overall output of every employee. The fact the current work environment is constantly changing as people get exposed to a variety of issues results in the need to offer positive advice for all people that interact with other people in a social or professional context. In-person analysis is required to ensure affected persons do not get negative outcomes when they receive external connections and unfamiliar outcomes.
The interpersonal study of mental health issues requires study of how mental healthcare providers’ mental health is important when they deal with patients (Picco et al., 2017; Planey et al., 2017; Picco et al., 2017). The ability to provide proper mental healthcare is connected to the capability of mental healthcare providers to generate positive social, psychological, and emotional improvements to all affected persons. There are variety of mental healthcare professionals who are therapists, psychiatrists, social workers, and nurses who frequently engage with patients. Such persons require high degree of professionalism to ensure they are capable of generating required outcomes for the affected persons (Moutier, 2018). The ability to improve mental health is connected to possibility of generating proper treatment based on patients’ conditions.
From a systemic perspective, mental health institutions have a critical connection to the acceptance or rejection of mental health improvement initiatives. The mode of treatment provided by each medical provider has an impact on the overall outcome for each patient. White et al. (2020) explained that one-to-one peer support is a critical technique that can get applied by mental health institutions to offer suitable care for affected persons. The institutions can offer hospitalization equipment and professional persons that can have an impact on the overall outcome for the patients. Issues occur when the institutions lack proper high standard medical equipment that can suit the ability of patients to receive full treatment. Further, there are issues of rejection that occur when patients deny the positive impact that healthcare institutions would have on their wellbeing.
The ability to offer required health improvement is also connected to the availability of training and development for each mental healthcare provider. The choice of treatment, whether it shall be in-patient care, specialist care, or primary care is dependent on the healthcare institution’s mode of operation (Gillard, 2019; Radez et al., 2021; Probst, 2017). This has an impact on the ability to generate effective outcomes for the patients. From this perspective, it is evident that issues of rejection of mental healthcare initiatives would occur based on the requirements that each party has (Wakida et al., 2018; Radmanović & Burgić, 2017). This paper shall study how each mental healthcare professional can impact quality of care and ability of patients to receive required improvements. The relationship by mental healthcare institutions and the ability to generate required improvements depends on acceptance on known standards of care by the patients.
There are issues of rejection of mental health improvement measures by persons from the LGBT community and those with religious backgrounds. The issue of mental health occurs for persons from the LGBT community since they receive a lot of stigma and negative social encounters (Whaibeh et al., 2020). These issues form a barrier for mental health improvement since it becomes difficult to provide care as the affected persons constantly receive negative environments. The issue of sexual orientation is also connected to the ability to generate effective outcomes for affected persons since they may not identify that they need help (Williams, 2017). This forms a background for mental health improvement health improvement measures since it is imperative to generate a positive environment for affected persons to identify their need to improve the mental wellbeing.
This study shall focus on barriers of mental health improvement that are connected to the desire to receive appropriate care. Discrimination is a detrimental barrier that forms development of more issues related to the mental health sector (Williams et al., 2019; Reardon et al., 2017; Rafferty et al., 2019). It is imperative to discover techniques of solving mental health issues that affect capability of different persons from improving their output. Barriers for mental health improvement often occur further as affected persons lack cognitive capability to improve their wellbeing (Whittle et al., 2018; Ribiero et al., 2018; Reardon et al., 2017). This is detrimental to all health improvement measures since it becomes difficult for the professional persons to engage with patients and to offer them care.
This proposal shall identify all barriers for mental health improvement in Texas (Mental Health America, 2020). This is effective in identifying issues related to mental healthcare since it would be possible to find a connection between the affected persons and their ability to receive care.
