I need an original post that answers the question in part A. It needs to be 200 words at least with one source. I need replies to student response’s in part B. I will have the students’ response and I will need you to reply to their response. It needs to be as if you were replying to them in a forum setting. Don’t mention, “The student’s post was…” or anything referencing the student. Write them as if you are talking to them directly. There are two student replies they need to be at least 100 words each, sources are not necessary.
- How does an Inaugural Speech compare to the daily actions of a president? This week we reviewed the inaugural speeches of JFK and LBJ as well as an overview of their presidencies. Select one speech and compare the ideas and goals of the speech to the ensuing presidential term. Consider how Kennedy or Johnson sought to frame their presidency with how it actually evolved. Make sure to cite specific passages as they relate to specific events during the presidency.
Student One
“President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. Amazingly the entire assassination was captured by Abraham Zapruder in two different segments, the first being seven seconds long and the second, at 19 seconds [1]. The amateur video shot by Zapruder in Dealey Plaza lives on in infamy. It also, along with various conspiracy theories, adds to the mythos attached to JFK and his assassination.
With the footage captured in real time and purchased by Time Inc., the assassination was captured and interpreted as truth almost immediately. Life published an article that disputed rumors about “the presumed difficulty of firing three accurate shots in the time Oswald had” [2]. Life was such an influence at the time, as it was in American circulation and reaching over 7 million households. The footage and explanation set forth by Life penetrated the investigation by the FBI. The Warren Commission, established by Lyndon B. Johnson, claimed that according to “a motion picture taken… by an amateur photographer, Abraham Zapruder… The best estimate of the time interval of the shots fired is that approximately six seconds elapsed from the first to the final shot, with the second shot occurring approximately in the middle.” [3]
The viewing of the film shot by Zapruder can be viewed today and disputed by eyewitness accounts, re-enactments and research conducted post-assassination. This has spawned conspiracy theories ranging from assassination plots conducted by the CIA in conjunction with the mob; Russian motives to commit the act based on foreign relations and ties to the shooter, Lee Harvey Oswald; and possibilities that the assassination was tied to the Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson and his desire to usurp the presidency from President Kennedy.

“There are several occasions where Russia and the United States came into conflict in the 1950’s and 1960’s which would continue the Cold War. Some of these occasions were direct contact and others were not.
The Cuban Missiles Crisis demonstrates particular importance because the two nuclear powers of Russia and the United States came very close to a nuclear conflict. In 1959, Fidel Castro came into power and aligned himself with Russia.
Cuba began to rely on Russia for military and economic aid. An American pilot made a reconnaissance flyover of Cuba and discovered installations of Russian made ballistic missiles. This was made even more threatening as Cuba is located only 90 miles south of the United States. The US implemented a blockade and would not allow Russian ships to pass. Russia accused the US that the blockade was an act of aggression.
In the next few days, word was received from Russia that if we assured Russia that we would not invade Cuba, Russia would remove the missiles from Cuba under the supervision of the United Nations. At this time, Russia and the United States made another agreement that Russia wanted the US to remove its missiles from Turkey. All parties agreed and there was no escalation of hostility towards one another.
After the Cuban crisis, the two powers agreed to establish a direct phone line between the two respective countries. Though the missiles were removed from Cuba, Russia “escalated the building of their military arsenal”[1].
Another instance of the Cold War was Russia’s invasion of Czechoslovakia in the late 1960’s. After WW2, Czechoslovakia wanted to participate in the Marshall Plan rebuild but those efforts were stopped by Russia and Russia established a Communist government. There were a number of leadership changes in Czechoslovakia in the 60’s and they all advocated reform “within the existing framework of the Marxist Lenin state”[2]. Their focus was to implement changes intended “to soften or humanize the application of communist doctrines”[3].
The activity within the Czech government troubled Soviet leaders and they feared these reforms would spread to other Soviet countries in Eastern Europe. In August,1968, the Warsaw Pact made up of Soviet troops along with small number of troops from East Germany, Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria staged military exercises near the Czech border. In the midst of this activity, these military forces invaded Czechoslovakia and “took control of Prague, other major cities, and communication and transportation links”[4]. This takeover was successful.
Russia believed that the United States would make an official statement condemning the Russian actions but would not resort to military force due to the United States increasing involvement in Vietnam and Russia was correct.
Russia took steps to improve the Czech economy which helped to eliminate some of the Czech discontent that was fueling some of their rebellious feelings. Czechoslovakia “became a cooperative member of the Warsaw Pact” [5] again.
This invasion was noteworthy because it did not elicit an intervention “from the West” [6] and it prevented the dissolving of the “Eastern European Communism”[7]. The other notable is that it postponed the détente between Russia and the United States but only by a few years. In the long term, it established a precedent of invasion as it had occurred in Prague and was known as the “Brezhnev Doctrine”[8]. In the years to come, the Brezhnev Doctrine was the basis that Russia used in invading Afghanistan in 1979.
