Objective: To better understand how music reflects personal and social identities of an individual or group.

Requirements: Write a 750–1000 word essay discussing a particular song or composition that you feel best expresses your personal and social identity. Include a link to a recording of the example along with your essay. (Please choose Rock or Country)

Instructions: Music is a manifestation of the personal and social identities of an individual or group. The function of the music, the structure of it, the context in which it is performed, etc., all reflect the cultural environment that surrounds a musical performance and indicate significant values of the people who create it. Recognizing and understanding how music reflects the identity of a community is an important means of “getting to know” other people and how music expresses “who they are.” I want to “get to know you” and discover what music says about “who you are.” (I assume that as music and non-music majors you consider music an important element of your life.) Undoubtedly, most of you listen to many kinds of music, i.e., classical, rock, rap, gamelan(?). Your task is to choose ONE example of music that you feel best expresses the many facets of YOU, i.e., your identity. This will prove more difficult than you think if you put some thought into it. Don’t tell me what music means to you, explain how the example you have chosen represents who you are. (Please choose Rock or Country)

For example, as an American, what one example would you choose to reflect your “American” identity? Does rap define who we are? Britney Spears? Norah Jones? Rage Against the Machine? Does the music of Mozart and Beethoven represent us, even though its origin is European? How about jazz? What kind of jazz? Which composer and from what era? Defining “American” identity through one example of music is impossible, yet in this class (and others) we only have time to focus on a few examples from countries often much larger than the USA and with histories much older than our meager 225+ years of existence as a nation. Yet, through just a few music examples the spiritual beliefs, political philosophies, attitudes, and activities of many aspects of life are revealed. We are able to learn something about the people of other cultures and gain a greater understanding of “who they are.”

So, ask yourself some questions: What music do I like to listen to? What music do I like to perform? Why? How does this music reflect me personally, my philosophy of life, my goals and desires, my spiritual beliefs, my personal history and life experiences? How does this example reflect my social identity, i.e., the friends I have, the organizations I belong to, the activities I participate in, etc.? Start with some of these questions and soon you’ll think of more. Then pick ONE example that says it all (or as much as it can) and tell me about it and why you picked it. I’m looking forward to “getting to know you” better.

talk about the downsizing/closing of major chain stores

please talk about the downsizing/closing of major chain stores (ex. Sears, JC Penney, Best Buy, Gander Mountain, etc.) and provide support as to why you think this is occurring. Discuss the emerging online piece of strategy for all of these firms as well as for WalMart and Target (ex. Walmart recently purchased JET–why did they do that? Amazon recently purchased Whole Foods–why did they do that?). Take this discussion any direction you wish but do bring out what is happening from a strategic point of view.
An age-old question is “Does structure follow strategy or does strategy follow structure?” The new, successful firms appear to be on-line driven and not really interested in brick and mortar. Amazon is the obvious example. Does the rapid growth of Amazon and similar firms put pressure on Walmart and Target, etc. to change or can they still survive (can anyone still survive) without creating online revenue streams to go along with their traditional strategy of storefronts? Is Amazon a true Technology company? They never really developed or wanted to develop a brick and mortar strategy. Is ecommerce, in all its forms, the Blue Ocean of today (soon to become Red)? Is this truly the future, the destiny of retail and many other industries?

Annotated playlist

In this assignment, you will create a Spotify playlist of 10 pieces related to your chosen affect. These pieces must be spaced out through history and be pulled from at least 4 different eras (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Galant, Classical, Romantic, Modern). You may choose pieces of any classical genre that you feel are representative of your affect. Possible affects include: love, hatred, sorrow, joy, or fear.

Part 1 (due February 12, 2021 by 11:59pm PST)

Choose your affect and 5 pieces to begin your annotated playlist. You may include pieces that we studied in class. Create a document describing why you believe each piece fits your affect.

Each annotation must include:

Composer and piece title
Era of the piece (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Galant, Classical, Romantic, Modern)
Genre of the piece (chant, madrigal, opera, ballet, symphony, concerto, etc.)
2-3 sentence description as to why you believe the musical elements of the piece fit your affect, such as the melody (conjunct, disjunct), harmony (consonant, dissonant), tempo (fast, slow, etc.)
2-3 sentence description of either the historical background (composed for war, composed for church, etc.) or the context of the piece (love aria in an opera, concerto movement describing a storm, etc.) and how that fits your affect
Below are playlists to help you begin thinking about pieces. You are welcome to use any classical works from class, from these playlists, or chose your own.

nutrition and protein supplements

The journal article you select should be a research study related to protein supplements and sports performance. Our research question is: Do protein supplements improve sports performance?

Again, a research article is not a review article but reports the results of a research study. You can tell the difference between a research article and a review article because a review article summarizes several research studies.

list your selected article,
provide the reference for your chosen article
describe the study and the results,
state what the study concluded,
evaluate the article. Do you think the study made appropriate conclusions from its data? Was the study designed correctly to address the hypothesis?
Does the study support the hypothesis that protein supplements are safe? If yes, tell us how. If no, again tell us how.
