I did Capstone Project Blog for first 2 weeks. It is here: a) Introduction/Overview: This week I tried to explore the nutritional needs, limitations and strengths of the residents of Mermaid Manor. I was wondering if there is a relationship between their diet and the occurrence of the episodes of low blood sugar and high blood pressure, what recommendations and changes in the diet can eliminate or reduce the likelihood of these episodes. During these two weeks, I spoke a lot with residents who were diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension. I talked to them about their food preferences, their daily diet, and daily routine. I also spoke with social worker about the availability of family support. Some family members actively participate in the life of residents, additionally providing them with food. Unfortunately, such support is not always favorable for residents. Often family members bring home-made food. However, some residents reported that several times a week they have fast food that they buy themselves or receive from their relatives. I feel that these two weeks have been useful. Now I understand in which direction I should move to complete my project. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to communicate with the people and get to know them personally. In each case, I see particular problems and the causes of these problems. It is very exciting to realize that I can try to solve some of these problems, make the lives of these people safer and more comfortable by reducing the risks of hypoglycemia episodes and hypertensive crises. That is how I can help these people stay independent as long as possible. b) Challenges: One of the most serious problems that arose during these two weeks was the inability of some patients to participate in the project. Several residents expressed their disagreement with answering questions and providing any information. Several patients had Alzheimer’s disease and were unable to participate in the project due to dementia. I also faced a situation in which residents were getting distracted from the asked question and talked about something completely unrelated to the topic of their nutrition and health. I received a lot of information, but not as much as I would like. I also had difficulties arranging a meeting with a social worker due to different schedules. c) Utilization of coaching and/or mentoring: Over the past two weeks I have received only positive emotions from working with the manor workers. I felt that they were ready to support me and provide with the necessary information. On the other hand, I feel that I can act as an educator in order to increase the knowledge of residents about diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as the ability to control these diseases through proper nutrition. d) Capstone Project Plan Progress: I learned a lot of information about the residents, about their lifestyle, family relationships, the diet despite some difficulties. Based on this, I think that my project is progressing according to plan and timeline. I had several failures because some residents refused to participate in the project, and some could not due to their health reasons. There were also some problems due to the mismatch of the work schedule. In general, I am satisfied with the work done and I think that these two weeks were productive. These were the first steps, and I already know what to do next to achieve the desired results. e) Leadership lessons learned: I understand that for a successful implementation of my project, I will need to act as a leader. I have already encountered the situations where I needed to coordinate a meeting with several people. I had to arrange the time to avoid overlaps in the schedule, so that everyone was comfortable. This moment was mildly stressful for me. However, I believe that I successfully coped with this task and I fulfilled all my plans without straining the people with whom I worked. “When leaders can’t manage stress or maintain a positive attitude, employees are more likely to see those leaders as harmful or irrelevant to employee and organizational performance” (Training Industry, 2017). f) Outcomes achieved: A trusting relationship was established with the residents who will participate in the project. In the process of communicating with residents, social workers and nurses, I made sure of the necessity of this project. I received valuable information that helped me determine future actions to achieve the goals of the project Track clinical hours weekly/running total: DATA HOURS ACTIVITIES 09/08/2020 3 hrs Started researching nutritional issues for people diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Due to coronavirus outbreak I was not able to visit libraries. I found the information I was interested in using the online resources of Baruch Newman Library. 09/09/2020 3 hrs A meeting with management of Mermaid Manor and nursing staff was arranged. The necessity of my project, as well as issues related to its implementation were discussed. 09/10/2020 3 hrs Met with residents to evaluate their nutritional intake, their habits, daily routine and family support. 09/12/2020 3 hrs Met with nursing staff to discuss residents’ blood glucose levels and blood pressure levels in order to get the baseline for further evaluation of the results of the project.
