2-1 Worksheet: Interpreting Statistics Worksheet

In order for psychologists to conduct effective assessments, they must interpret test data. This assignment provides you an opportunity to analyze two sets of data and practice interpreting them. This assignment is intended as a review of descriptive statistics and correlation—a refresher to set the stage for understanding how these concepts will be applied in future modules, to understand what the scores represent, and to be able to summarize the data in a meaningful way.

The included data set contains two sets of data—Verbal IQ test scores and Reading test scores, along with descriptive statistics for each variable and correlation data comparing the two variables. Please answer the following questions in the space provided in the Interpreting Statistics Worksheet.

The Self and Interactions with the Environment

Humans interact with the environment through social cognition, social attention, and social heuristics. The self distinctly influence each of these environmental interactions. In this assignment, you will explore the relationship of the self to interactions with the environmental through social cognition, social attention, and social heuristics.

General Requirements:

Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:

  • This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
  • Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.
  • This assignment requires that at least two additional scholarly research sources related to this topic, and at least one in-text citation from each source be included.
  • You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. A link to the LopesWrite technical support articles is located in Class Resources if you need assistance.

Directions:

Write a paper (1,500-1,750 words) in which you discuss the relationship of the self to interactions with the environment through social cognition, social attention, and social heuristics. Include the following in your paper:

  1. A research-based discussion of how the self influences social cognition. What role, if any, is played by self-regulation? What factors affect a favorable self-concept in relationships? Why? (Benchmarks C3.5: Analyze cognitive processes used to understand ourselves and others.)
  2. A research-based discussion of how nature and nurture influence cognitive development. How is social cognition influenced by nature and/or nurture? (Benchmarks C3.1: Critically analyze the influence of nature and nurture on cognitive development.)
  3. A research-based discussion of how the self influences social attention. What grabs your attention? Why? How do verbal and non-verbal expression influence your attention?
  4. A research-based discussion of how the self influences social heuristics. How does the self influence which shortcuts are preferred in a given situation?
  5. A discussion of psychometrically sound measures that could be applied in a research study to explore the relationship of the self to interactions with the environment through social cognition, social attention, and social heuristics. What properties of these measures make them reasonable for use in such a research study?

Identification of problem space

The purpose of this assignment is to keep the doctoral learner focused on dissertation success. The Identification of the Problem Space section of the dissertation identifies the problem space in the literature from which the problem statement and research questions emerged. It provides boundaries for the literature review and describes how the study will address the problem. The section describes how the research fits with and will contribute to or advance the current literature or body of research. Although this advancement may be a small step forward in a line of current research, it must add to the current body of knowledge and align to the learner’s program of study.

General Requirements:

Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:

  • Refer to the potential research design you drafted as an assignment in a previous course.
  • Retain this paper for reference in future courses.
  • Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.
  • Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association for specific guidelines related to doctoral-level writing. These chapters contain essential information on manuscript structure and content, clear and concise writing, and academic grammar and usage.
  • This assignment requires that at least two additional scholarly research sources related to this topic, and at least one in-text citation from each source be included.
  • You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. A link to the LopesWrite technical support articles is located in Class Resources if you need assistance.

Directions:

Write a report (500-750 words) in which you:

  1. Identify the problem space in the literature that was used to define the problem statement and develop the research questions.
  2. Describe how your study will fit with and contribute to or advance the current literature or body of research.

Prezi Assignment

The prezi must be a topic of your choosing in Western Civilization. You are doing a 2-5 minute video in your own words and creativity and not plagiarizing from the textbook or any other source.
