There has been ample news coverage of the Orlando terrorist attack this past summer and the behavior of the shooter Omar Mateen.

  1. Read or watch news coverage from several mainstream news sources, such as CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC; New York Times. FB memes aren’t acceptable sources of information.
  2. Then look through the DSM-5 and speculate if Mateen qualifies for a mental health diagnosis. You’re not expected to be as accurate as a licensed psychologist. It is quite common for psychologists to write “R/O” for “rule out” a particular diagnosis. This practice indicates that there is some indication of a particular disorder, however there may not be enough evidence yet to use the diagnosis. Students may also find the section on “defense mechanisms” from Nevid et al. to be useful as well.
  3. Defense Mechanisms aren’t DSM diagnoses, but nonetheless may be helpful in understanding Mateen.
  4. Explain the diagnoses which you select.
  5. Cite your sources by including web address for news sources, although complete APA format isn’t required.
  6. Hate speech about LGBT persons or Islam will not be tolerated.
  7. Closes September 8th

Sexual Disconnect

James and Yelena have been married for 22 years and have three grown children, now out of the house. Sex was never particularly enjoyable for Yelena, primarily because James was uninterested in much foreplay and Yelena felt it was unfeminine to make any sexual demands of her husband. However, because of her love for James, she accommodated his desire for sex two or three times a week, and consistently “faked orgasms.”

James also does not think “a real man” should receive any “help” from his wife to get an erection, even when his erections became less firm and less predictable. As a result, over the last two years, James rarely initiated sex and Yelena felt relieved, thinking she would now be “excused from sex.” Furthermore, she is in perimenopause, and has begun to experience increasingly uncomfortable penetration. Suddenly, James’ vigor and sexual interest has returned with greater intensity than ever. Yelena discovered he was secretly taking Viagra, which he obtained over the Internet.

    • Discuss how effective you think Viagra will be for improving James’ sex life, and why?
    • Suppose Yelena’s discovery that James is using Viagra secretly is the “last straw” for her after years of not addressing her unsatisfying sexual life with him, and she demands that they seek marriage counseling and focus on their sex life.

      In this case:

      • What part of this dilemma should a counselor point out is Yelena’s responsibility to acknowledge and address? Additionally, what special issues regarding her perimenopause will need to be addressed?
      • What part of this dilemma should a counselor point out is James’ responsibility to acknowledge and address?

  • Discuss specific treatment options for this couple that are supported by the research you learned about in your readings.

Submit your response to the M2: Assignment 2 Dropbox by Wednesday, September 21, 2016. Your response should be at least 3 pages long, not counting the cover page and reference page.

Philosophy Mill’s Principle Of Utility

v

Mill’s Principle of Utility

Please work with your classmates to construct a high-quality, extended academic discussion of the following questions. As always in our class, please work together to clarify concepts, explore questions, and analyze specific passages from our excerpt of Mill’s Utilitarianism. •What, according to Mill, is greatest happiness principle? Exactly how does he think that principle can be used to determine whether a proposed course of action would be the right or the wrong thing to do? •How easy or hard is to to apply the utilitarian “hedonistic calculus”? Does performing these calculations require us to know exactly what will happen in the future? If not, how can we be confident that we understand what the consequences of a proposed action will be?

NOTE: The Meaning of UTILITY British English and American English can look the same but have very different meanings. For Mill, “utility” means “usefulness”–just like if you had a “utility room” or “utility closet” in your home or place or business, that would be where you stored your “useful” things (like brooms, mops, and so forth).

So, when Mill talks about the Principle of Utility, it might help to read it as the “Principle of Usefulness.” The most “useful” ethical decision will be the one that results in the greatest amount of happiness for the majority of the people. And, if we add Bentham’s Hedonic Calculus, the Calculus becomes a sort of “costs and benefits” analysis for ethical decision-making for determing the action which would produce the most useful results for the majority of the people who would be affected by that decision (since that would make them happier).
