Papers are to be between 8-10 pages (2000-2500 words). Topics are to be broad
enough to examine an area(s) such as race, social-economic classes, or gender, in a particular
period of time or event. However, your topic should not be too broad that the paper lacks depth.
Papers must contain correct citations using Chicago-Turabian footnotes.
Bibliography – Each student will find at least five primary and at least two
secondary sources relevant to your final project. Note that all sources need to
meet college level academic standards. Secondary sources must be peer reviewed
journal articles and/or books from creditable publishers. I recommend using like
JSTOR and EBSCO Search Premiere in order to find creditable secondary
sources. Secondary sources from blogs, internet encyclopedias, or general public
online or print magazines that are meant for the general public are not acceptable.
If you find journal articles, make sure they are the actual article and not a review
of a book. Primary sources are often easily obtained through a Google search.
Primary sources are documents produced at the time of event. Common primary
sources are as follows: government documents, letters, speeches, diary entries,
and newspaper arities written within a couple of days of the event. The
bibliography portion must be completed before moving on to the annotated
bibliography. A late bibliography -10% on final project grade for each week
past due date.
- Final paper/presentation – The project will be graded on the following criteria:
Historical accuracy with a clear thesis statement that begins the paper
Depth of information by using all sources cited in the annotated bibliography
Clarity of writing
Correct citations using Chicago Turabian
Proper grammar
- A final note on the assignment. When looking for sources – the library is a must.Librarians are to help/assist you finding sources and using search tools properly. You may also want to checkhttp://www.anokaramsey.edu/resources/library/ to download articles from JSTOR and/or Ebsco. Also you need time.Students who begin their final project earlier and continue to work on it throughout the semester are often those who obtain the best grades.Lastly, a must for all college writing is adopting a cycle of writing, proof reading and editing.Like any skill, writing is to be practiced. No one should expect to make par the first time they golf – it takes practice.Likewise, getting good grades on writing assignments takes dedication, the right tools, coaching, and a hunger to learn and improve.
The annotated bibliography is attached. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
