Your Signature Assignment, drawn from your assignments and warm-up activities throughout the course, has three parts. You will submit all three parts compiled into one document for your instructor’s review.

Part 1: History of Psychology Notebook

Part 1 of the Signature Assignment focuses on your analyses of the experiments in the texts.   Of the several experiments that you will read about weekly, you focused on two for each assignment.  You will now compile your analyses of those experiments into your own History of Psychology Notebook.  In addition to the analyses of your articles, add the following to your History of Psychology Notebook:

Briefly answer (two to three paragraphs each):

  • Which of the experiments you studied was most personally meaningful, and why?
  • Which of the experiments that you studied do you think had the most impact on the science of psychology?
  • Which of the experiments that you studied do you think had the most impact for individual mental health or society?

Include a reference list citing the original research studies you analyzed, as well as any other research you referred to in your History of Psychology Notebook.

As this is an electronic notebook, you can enhance it with any pictures, images, graphics, or even audios that you want.

Length 18-20 pages (3 pages already completed in each week’s assignment, and one page for the reflection

Part 2: Timeline of the History of Psychology

Each week, you noted an important psychological experiment along a History of Psychology Timeline, along with at least one social or historical event that took place during that time. Now, based on your readings of the past and current research in psychology, make your own predictions about the future of psychology.  For the years 2020, 2025, and 2030, imagine what you think will be the most important psychological finding of that time. Mark that on the timeline. Then for each of those years, mark a social, cultural, or technological change that you think will form the context for those experiments or discoveries.

Length: One timeline page, beginning with the earliest experiment you analyzed and continuing until the year 2030

Part 3: Careers and Education in Psychology

Review your list of careers and education in psychology. Based on your study of the careers available in each area of psychology, as well as any non-psychology careers you may have identified that are appropriate choices for psychology majors, choose three possible career or academic choices. Explain the following:

• Why do you think this career would be appropriate for you?

• Do you need any additional training or education to qualify?

• What kind of resources or lifestyle changes will be required to meet this goal?

• What steps can you identify now that might help you achieve your goals?

Length: 1 – 1.5 pages

Remember you will submit all three parts in one document. Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to the topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be careful to adhere to Northcentral’s Academic Integrity Policy.

Before completing this assignment, be sure to read the articles by Waschull (2005) and Roper (2007) provided in the Module/Week 1 Reading & Study folder. Your assignment must be 3–4 pages, not including the title page or the reference page, and include the articles on the reference page. This assignment will give you an introductory look at current APA format and research in Psychology and will help you plan for success in this course.

How can you specifically incorporate these factors related to online success in this course?

Discussion 2: Counseling the Terminally Ill

Professional counselors face immense challenges when working with terminally ill patients. Deciding how to offer support is challenging with this population group. Providing treatment for terminally ill clients may illicit personal beliefs and values. As a counselor, you must not only consider the client’s needs, but also assess how providing treatment aligns with the guidelines proposed by the codes of ethics and legal mandates. A counselor’s professional judgment is rooted in personal beliefs and values; however, it is also molded by the foundational definitions of ethics learned in the counseling profession. Learning how to integrate professional codes of ethics into your personal moral compass is a critical skill for practicing ethical counseling.

For this Discussion, you have been asked to counsel a terminally ill client who is considering hastening his own death. Consider what personal values this triggers in you. Investigate what the ethical codes say about this. Think about your potential course of action.

Post by Day 3 an explanation of your personal values that may be triggered by this case. Then, explain one potential ethical challenge related to counseling terminally ill patients. Finally, explain the potential course of action you may take in this case. Use the codes of ethics to support this action.

Be sure to use the Learning Resources and the current literature to support your response.

Respond by Day 5 and propose different challenges that your colleague did not discuss related to counseling terminally ill patients. Then, provide an alternate course of action for this case.

You must assemble the scrapbook as follows:

The reflection paper is your chance to describe how you interpret and understand the material. Include any thoughts about how you perceive you can use the information learned from the course.

Philosophical Differences Between Qualitative and Quantitative Paradigms and Approaches

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 1 in the Frost e-book, Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology, and the required journal articles for this week. Also review last week’s PSY635 Week Two Discussion Scenario (Links to an external site.). In that scenario, the three instructors realized there are limits to the insights they can gain through anonymous counting of discussion posts. The instructors would like to answer two additional research questions: (a) How do their students actually feel about the intervention? and (b) How do students view the influence of the intervention on their learning inside and outside of the classroom (if applicable)?

In your initial post, compare the characteristics of appropriate research designs and recommend a qualitative research design that would facilitate answering the instructors’ additional questions. Explain the philosophical paradigm underlying the recommended approach. Evaluate the required articles for this week and describe the  assumptions the instructors might have to set aside as they enter into a qualitative research study. Be sure to identify any ethical issues that may apply to the research. Review the characteristics of the quantitative approach you described in the Week Two discussion. Explain the ways in which the quantitative approach and paradigm differs from the qualitative approach and paradigm you have recommended here.
