Introduction

As you develop professionally, you may find certain issues more meaningful to you and center your practice around such work. Maybe, for varied reasons, assisting lesbian and gay couples in the process of becoming parents is central to your interest and your vision of your clinical work. Perhaps you are interested in helping empty-nest parents adjust to their new phase in life. You should seek continued training on such specialty issues as you develop a clinical focus. On the other hand, maybe you experience challenges, for various reasons, when dealing with certain life transition or development issues.

This week you continue to explore life transition and development issues so that you may begin to think about areas around which you may experience challenges. Awareness of these issues and the steps you might take to overcome them will ultimately help you narrow down your clinical focus in the future. Finally, as in last week’s Application Assignment, you conceptualize cases and select theory-based interventions for couples and families experiencing life transition and developmental issues.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this week, you should be able to:

  • Analyze personal challenges to working with couples and families experiencing life transition and developmental issues
  • Develop and justify treatment plans for couples and families experiencing life transition and developmental issues
  • Apply counseling theories and theory-based interventions to couples and families experiencing life transitions and developmental issues

create an outline of the main points of your Final Project, using your selected neuropsychological disorder as approved by the instructor in Week 1.

Final Project Annotated Outline

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review your completed Week 1 and Week 2 assignments, (ASSIGNMENT 2 included in attachments) and familiarize yourself with the DSM-5 by accessing it in the Ashford University Library. Look up your selected psychological disorder (generalized Anxiety) in the DSM-5 (this is the same as the disorder you wrote about in the Week 1 and Week 2 assignments) to determine the diagnostic criteria, as well as other current information and terminology, and use this resource as one of your references (be sure to use in-text citations for the information used).

Please be sure to use current terminology as described in the DSM-5 for neuropsychological disorders. This book is a manual of neuropsychological disorders and the diagnostic criteria needed to make the clinical diagnosis. This reference is used by mental health professionals and will assist you in your assignment this week, as well as all course work in this class. If your disorder is purely neurological, be sure to include current clinical guidelines, diagnostic criteria, terminology, and the neurobiology involved in the pathology, using current guidelines from the appropriate professional societies.

This assignment is an analysis of the neuropsychological disorder that supports your Final Project. You will create an outline of the main points of your Final Project, using your selected neuropsychological disorder as approved by the instructor in Week 1.(GENERALIZED ANXIETY) The Final Project outline will be organized into three sections, each main section having required components. This outline is both an analysis of your topic, as well as a tool to ensure that you are on the right track with your Final Project. The more information you provide, the more feedback you will receive from your instructor, which will be helpful as you write your Final Project.

For this assignment you must:

  • Complete and submit the Final Project Annotated Outline templatePreview the document to Waypoint.(PROVIDEDC IN ATTACHMENTS)
    • Use the references you found for the Week 1 assignment and the Week 2 annotated bibliography assignment. (SEE ASSIGNMENT 2 REFERENCES PROVIDED IN ATTACHMENTS)You may also use additional references as necessary.
    • With the exception of the DSM-5, you may cite and reference course materials such as the textbook, required or recommended reading, or multimedia, but these will not fulfill the source requirement.

Please note: This assignment should incorporate information from your Week 1 and Week 2 assignment, but it must expand on that information and use the template provided, which is in the format of an annotated outline.

· Analyze and explain how the patient meets criteria for the disorder(s) according to the patient’s symptoms and the criteria outlined in the diagnostic manual.

Psychiatric Diagnosis

For this assignment, students will investigate and propose a psychiatric diagnosis based on the case study from the Gorenstein and Comer (2015) textbook Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology, chosen in the Week One “Initial Call” discussion. This paper will include an in-depth overview of the disorder(s) within the diagnosis, treatment options for the diagnosis, and a sound rationale that explains why this diagnosis was made. Note that the diagnosis may include more than one psychiatric disorder.

The paper must present a thorough overview of each disorder within the diagnosis. Assume the audience has no prior knowledge of the disorder(s) within the diagnosis, and provide relevant and easy to understand explanations of each for the readers. When writing the paper, it is critical to convey all the necessary information in a straightforward manner using non-technical language. (Reference the Professional Voice and Writing (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. resource provided by the Ashford Writing Center for assistance.) Support the analysis with at least five peer-reviewed sources published within the last ten years in addition to the course text.

The Psychiatric Diagnosis topical paper must include the following:

· Explain psychological concepts in the patient’s presentation using professional terminology. Identify symptoms and behaviors exhibited by the patient in the chosen case study.

· Match the identified symptoms to potential disorders in a diagnostic manual.

· Propose a diagnosis based on the patient’s symptoms and the criteria listed for the disorder(s) in the diagnostic manual.

· Analyze and explain how the patient meets criteria for the disorder(s) according to the patient’s symptoms and the criteria outlined in the diagnostic manual.

· Justify the use of the chosen diagnostic manual (i.e., Why was this manual chosen over others?).

· Summarize general views of the diagnosis from multiple theoretical orientations and historical perspectives. Include a discussion on comorbidity if the diagnosis includes more than one disorder.

· Evaluate symptoms within the context of an appropriate theoretical orientation for this diagnosis.

· Use at least two peer-reviewed articles to assess the validity of this diagnosis, and describe who is most likely to have the diagnosis with regard to age, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. Provide a brief evaluation of the scientific merit of these peer-reviewed sources in the validity assessment.

· Summarize the risk factors (i.e., biological, psychological, and/or social) for the diagnosis. If one of the categories is not relevant, address this within the summary.

· Compare evidence-based and non-evidence-based treatment options for the diagnosis.

· Evaluate well-established treatments for the diagnosis, and describe the likelihood of success or possible outcomes for each treatment.

· Create an annotated bibliography of five peer-reviewed references published within the last ten years to inform the diagnosis and treatment recommendations. In the annotated bibliography, write a two- to three-sentence evaluation of the scientific merit of each of these references. which of the two brothers seems more likely to be achieving self- actualization and why do you think so?

CASE STUDY 1

When Cliff Richards took over as the new department manager, he discovered that the existing staff was unusually inefficient and unproductive. Cliff learned that the previous manager often criticized and chided staff members for every little mistake until many of the best people had left, and the rest felt demoralized. Cliff resolved not to criticize or punish staff members unless it was absolutely necessary. Instead, he frequently complimented them whenever they did a good job. He set daily production goals for them, and every Friday afternoon he bought lunch for all staff members who met their goals every day that week. Moreover, Cliff randomly conducted spot checks on what staff members were doing, and if he found them hard at work, he gave them small rewards such as extra break time. Within just three months, productivity in Cliff’s department nearly doubled. It became the most efficient department in the company.

1- how did cliff take advantage of principles of operant conditioning to modify his staff behavior?
2- why did cliffs predecessor stratagey of punishing undesirable behavior not work very well? even if punishment and reinforement strategies were equally effective at controlling behavior, why would reinforcement remain preferable?
3- how could cliff make use of partial reinforcement schedules? what kind of schedules did he use?
4- how could cliff use techinque to train his staff to complete a complex new task that they had never done before?
5- how might cliff make use of principles of cognitive learning theory to improve his staff productivity even further?

CASE Study 2

People often have difficulty believing that Mike and Marty Scanlon are brothers, let alone twins. The two men bear a resemblance, but the similarity ends there. Marty Scanlon was always a quiet, well-behaved child. He excelled in all his academic subjects throughout his school years, although he was shy and had few friends. Marty would always be polite to people, but he generally preferred to keep to himself. After college, Marty became a successful network administrator for a large financial company and married his longtime girlfriend. A dedicated family man, Marty spends most of his free time doing home improvement projects and looking after his two children. Mike Scanlon, on the other hand, could never be described as shy. He was the student that teachers dreaded having in their classroom: boisterous, unruly, and indifferent to authority. Mike had many brushes with the law throughout his high school years, for crimes ranging from vandalism to public drunkenness. Mike dropped out of high school to take a job as an oil-change technician at a local garage; he spends most of free time and money at local bars- at least the ones that haven’t banned him for starting fights. Mike’s current legal trouble surrounds two of his ex-girlfriends, who are independently taking him to court for child support. Mike is unfazed, however; he laughs with his friends that they’ll never get a dime from him.

1- how would freud explain the personality differences between mike and marty scanlon?
2- how would you rate mike and marty scanlon on the big five personality traits?
3- given that mike and marty are twins and share some of their genetic makeup, how would you explain the pronounced differences in their personalitites?
what role if any does temperament seem to be playing?
4- which of the two brothers seems more likely to be achieving self- actualization and why do you think so?
5- do mike and marty appear to have different levels of intelligence or do they show intelligence in different ways, why do you think so?
