Course Project: Case Study – Initial Assessment

This course has major project assignments due in Week 3 and Week 5. It will take more than a week’s effort to adequately complete them. Plan time to start the research and work on those assignments earlier than the week in which they are due.

For the final project for this course, you will develop a Leadership Intervention Strategy (LIS) for a make-believe prison that has asked for your help.

What is a leadership intervention?

The term “intervention” refers to a set of sequenced, planned actions or events intended to help an organization increase its effectiveness. Interventions are often facilitated by outside organizational development consultants or employees within the organization who have the competencies associated with a trusted change agent. In this case, you are going to take the role of an outside consultant.

Interventions can be done at the individual level, team level, and organizational level. What is important to keep in mind is the objective of all interventions is to help improve the effectiveness of individuals, groups, teams, and organizations.

An intervention strategy can be relatively simple in terms of one initiative to address a problem. For example, a company develops a safety committee after this was identified as an operating deficiency. However, most intervention strategies are more complex and have more than one initiative or sub-strategies which make up one large strategy. The complex approach is what you will do for your Prison X – Leadership Intervention Strategy for this course.

To assist you in planning for the final project, the following table provides a high-level overview of the final project deliverables during the course.

Explain Horney’s theory with reference to people in general? How does Horney’s theory help an individual in managing the conflict between his real self and idealized self?

Assignment 1: Discussion Assignment

The discussion assignment provides a forum for discussing relevant topics for this week based on the course competencies covered.

For this assignment, make sure you post your initial response to the Discussion Area by Saturday, May 21, 2016.

To support your work, use your course and text readings and also use outside sources. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between two or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Complete your participation for this assignment by Wednesday, May 25, 2016.

Horney’s Idea of the Real and Idealized Self

Horney talks about a real self and an idealized self. Those who live in accordance with their real self are considered healthy, while those who live in accordance with their idealized self are considered neurotic. There is conflict between the real self and idealized self for everyone and it is more extreme for those who are neurotic. Horney talks about seven devices that people use to deal with these conflicts: blind spots, compartmentalization, rationalization, excessive control, arbitrary rightness, elusiveness, and cynicism.

Based on your readings about Karen Horney’s approach to personality development, answer the following:

  • Give an example of at least two devices you have seen someone use from the given list.
  • Horney has been criticized and praised for elaborating on Freud’s theory by adding feminine components. How is her theory similar to and different from Freud’s theory of personality? Identify at least two similarities and differences.

Using Horney’s theory, attempt to explain why someone might use the major adjustment techniques the way they do.

  • Explain Horney’s theory with reference to people in general?
  • How does Horney’s theory help an individual in managing the conflict between his real self and idealized self?
  • How are the uses of each of the selected devices in the adjustment techniques considered either neurotic or healthy?

How do their students actually feel about the intervention? and (b) How do students view the influence of the intervention on their learning inside and outside of the classroom (if applicable)?

Week 3 – Discussion

No unread replies.No replies.

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Philosophical Differences Between Qualitative and Quantitative Paradigms and Approaches

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 1 in the Frost e-book, Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology, and the required journal articles for this week. Also review last week’s PSY635 Week Two Discussion Scenario (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. In that scenario, the three instructors realized there are limits to the insights they can gain through anonymous counting of discussion posts. The instructors would like to answer two additional research questions: (a) How do their students actually feel about the intervention? and (b) How do students view the influence of the intervention on their learning inside and outside of the classroom (if applicable)?

In your initial post, compare the characteristics of appropriate research designs and recommend a qualitative research design that would facilitate answering the instructors’ additional questions. Explain the philosophical paradigm underlying the recommended approach. Evaluate the required articles for this week and describe the  assumptions the instructors might have to set aside as they enter into a qualitative research study. Be sure to identify any ethical issues that may apply to the research. Review the characteristics of the quantitative approach you described in the Week Two discussion. Explain the ways in which the quantitative approach and paradigm differs from the qualitative approach and paradigm you have recommended here.

Guided Response: Review several of your colleagues’ posts and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion.

Respond to at least one peer who recommended a different qualitative design or paradigm than you did. Describe how your chosen paradigm might or might not be compatible with your colleague’s proposed research design. Evaluate your colleague’s identified ethical issues and suggest any addition concerns his or her design and/or paradigm might generate. Consider the explanation of differences between the quantitative and qualitative research approaches your colleague has provided. Suggest any differences between the two approaches which were not included in your colleague’s initial post. How might these differences affect the interpretation of the findings of the research?

Describe the concept of dialectical behavior therapy, being sure to include the six main points of this type of treatment.

Prior to beginning work on this week’s journal, read the PSY650 Week Four Treatment Plan ,Preview the documentView in a new window Case 15: Borderline Personality Disorder in Gorenstein and Comer (2014), and Borderline Personality Disorder in Sneed et al., . (2012). Please also read the Rizvi, et al. (2013), “An Overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Professional Psychologists,” Harned, et al.  (2013), “Treatment Preference Among Suicidal and Self-Injuring Women with Borderline Personality Disorder and PTSD,” Miller (2006), “Telehealth Issues in Consulting Psychology Practice,”  and Luxton, et al. (2011), “mHealth for Mental Health: Integrating Smartphone Technology in Behavioral Healthcare” articles.

Assess the evidence-based practices implemented in this case study. In your paper, include the following.

· Explain the connection between each theoretical orientation used by Dr. Bank’s and the interventions utilized in the case.

· Describe the concept of dialectical behavior therapy, being sure to include the six main points of this type of treatment.

· Explain Dr. Banks’s primary goal during the pre-treatment stage and how Dr. Banks related this to Karen in her initial therapy sessions.

· Describe the two formats that Dr. Banks told Karen would be part of her treatment program.

· Describe the focus of the second and third stages of treatment.

· Assume the role of a consulting clinical or counseling psychologist on this case, and recommend at least one technology-based e-therapy tool that would be useful. Explain liability issues related to delivering e-therapy consultation, supporting your response with information from the Miller (2006), “Telehealth Issues in Consulting Psychology Practice” article.

· Evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment interventions implemented by Dr. Banks supporting your statements with information from the case and two to three peer-reviewed articles from the Ashford University Library, in addition to those required for this week.

· Recommend three additional treatment interventions that would be appropriate in this case. Use information from the Sneed, Fertuck, Kanellopoulos, and Culang-Reinlieb (2012), “Borderline Personality Disorder” article to help support your recommendations. Justify your selections with information from the case.
