Develop two assessment questions that are guided by attachment theory that you would ask the client to understand how the stress or distress is affecting the client.

As you have read, theory guides the conceptualization of the client’s problem and how social workers assess and intervene relative to the problem. However, theory can also shape the self-reflective questions social workers ask themselves. Clients often come to social workers under stress or distress. This then affects how the social worker responds and thus the client-social worker relationship. As a result, Foley, Nash, and Munford (2009) employed attachment theory as a “lens in which to view the reflective process itself and to gain greater understanding and empathy for what each social worker within each unique social work-client relationship can access of that relationship for reflection” (pp. 44).

This week, you will apply attachment theory to the case study of Tifanni Bradley. In other words, your theoretical orientation—or lens—is attachment theory as you analyze the case study.

To prepare:

  • Use the “Dissecting a Theory and Its Application to a Case Study” worksheet to help you dissect the theory. You do not need to submit this handout. It is a tool for you to use to dissect the theory, and then you can employ the information in the table to complete your assignment.
  • Review attachment theory and the following article listed in the Learning Resources: Foley, M., Nash, M., & Munford, R. (2009). Bringing practice into theory: Reflective practice and attachment theory. Aotearoa New Zealand Social Work Review, 21(1/2), p39–47. Retrieved http://dx.doi.org/10.11157/anzswj-vol21iss1-2id318

Submit a 3 -page case write-up that addresses the following:

  • Summarize the assumptions of attachment theory in 2 to 3 sentences.
  • Identify the problem in your chosen case study to be worked on from an attachment theory perspective.
  • Explain how attachment theory defines and explains the cause of the problem in one to two sentences.
  • Develop two assessment questions that are guided by attachment theory that you would ask the client to understand how the stress or distress is affecting the client.
  • Discuss two interventions to address the problem. Remember, the theory should be driving the interventions. In other words, you would not identify systematic desensitization since this is not an intervention guided by attachment theory.
  • Formulate one self-reflective question that is influenced by attachment theory that you can ask yourself to gain greater empathy for what the client is experiencing.
  • Explain which outcomes you could measure to evaluate client progress based theory.

Be sure to:

  • Identify and correctly reference the case study you have chosen.
  • Use literature to support your claims.
  • Use APA formatting and style.
    • Remember to double-space your paper.

Create a 10-15-slide PowerPoint presentation about your selected case study and include the following:

Read any one case study from Chapter 13 (Personality Disorders) in DSM-5 in Action and research the specific personality disorder.

Create a 10-15-slide PowerPoint presentation about your selected case study and include the following:

Include the following in your presentation:

  • A brief description of the selected case study
  • Explanation and rationale for the Personality Disorder Diagnosis using the latest version of the DSM as a reference.
  • Information on the course of treatment for the disorder.
  • Identification of which cluster (A, B, or C) this personality disorder belongs to and an explanation of your rationale.
  • Information on the prognosis and prevalence of the disorder.
  • A minimum of five scholarly references including your textbook and the latest version of the DSM. Be sure to only use current and scholarly references for this assignment.
  • Detailed speaker notes that represent what you would say if giving the presentation in person.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Describe the study: What was the purpose of the research? What were the researchers studying? Was a hypothesis stated?  If so, what was it?

First of all: think of a topic of interest to you that applies to the course you are studying with me.   If you can’t think of a topic, go to the index in the textbook and choose a topic from there.  If you are unsure about a topic, you can also email me, or you could go to the Ohlone’s Library and simply browse through the Psychology Journals to find an interesting topic.  The Librarians are very helpful, if you have any questions. Or you can go online using the Ohlone’s Library link (Academic Premier Search).

Then, think about what aspect of your topic that you might want to focus on.  For example: 1) Teenage Depression and Drug Use, 2) Watching Violent Video Games and Later Aggression in Children, or 3) Consequences of Sexual Violence, etc.etc.

Find one article that is a primary sources, i.e. documenting studies that use the experimental method or a descriptive method.    The study you select must have participants.  The article cannot be either a literature review or Meta Analysis.  (If you do not know what these are, look up the definitions and if you’re still unsure, email me.)   Feel free to discuss any part of this with me; and, if you wish, you can show me the 1st page of the study you’ve found, just to make sure you are ‘on track.’  Do not use newspaper or magazine articles as these are, often, ‘secondary sources.’

In writing your paper you may not use more than 5 consecutive words from the study without using quotation marks around the passage and citing the source. State the name of the person who wrote the words that you are quoting.  The majority of the paper must be in your own words.  It’s important that you get into this ‘habit’ to avoid plagiarism accusations.

Your paper must include the following:

  1. Type 3 pages describing the study.  This could include:
  2. Describe the study: What was the purpose of the research? What were the researchers studying? Was a hypothesis stated?  If so, what was it?
  3. Who were the subjects? How many? How were they obtained?
  4. Describe the type of study that was conducted: Was this an experimental method or descriptive methods study?  Were the independent and dependent variables? What measurements were used?
  5. What were the results and conclusions of the study?
  6. Type a 1- 2 page critique of the study: What have you learned about this assignment?  Include your likes and dislikes.   If you had conducted the study what questions would you have asked?  Or perhaps the sample was too small, the sample wasn’t diverse enough; the operational definitions did not really measure what the researcher was wanting to measure, etc.
  7. Type the complete citation for the article. For example Smith, James C., “The Impact of TV Violence on Teens,” in Jo. of Child Development, vol. 2, issue 4, 1999, pp.1-52.   This can be typed at the end of your paper.
  8. Attach a photo of the 1st – 2 pages (PDF version) of the article.

What did you learn that confirms your prior knowledge from your research? What information surprised you?

In  the Stakeholder Interview and Reflection Assignment, you will interview a  person who has a vested interest in the research problem you are  investigating. You will submit a document to the dropbox with the  following information:

  1. A report of your stakeholder’s responses to your interview questions
  2. A reflection of the experience of interviewing the stakeholder

Part 1: Interview and Report

In Chapter 1, we learned that a stakeholder is a person who has an  interest or stake in a problem relevant to society (Repko, Szostak,  & Buchberger, 2017). The authors recommend that researchers look to  such stakeholders for their insights and expertise. Therefore, you will  identify a person who has a vested interest in the research problem you  are investigating and ask them questions to help you better understand  the problem. For example, if your research problem is how to reduce the  incidence of Type 2 diabetes in adolescents, appropriate stakeholders  would be a doctor, nurse, patient, or caregiver with experience with the  disease.

Use the questions below to interview a stakeholder associated with your problem.

  1. What is your role related to the problem/issue of ___________ and how do you interact with the issue on a daily or weekly basis?
  2. How long have you been involved with this issue/problem?
  3. What if any was your prior experience with this problem/issue?
  4. Did you receive any education/training to deal with the problem/issue, etc.)?
  5. What have been the biggest challenges and what has been the most  gratifying experience for you as you have worked with this  issue/problem?
  6. In your opinion, what are some causes of this problem?
  7. In your opinion, what are some of the effects of this problem?
  8. How could this problem be solved?

Upon completion of the interview, please write a report of the stakeholder’s responses to your interview questions.

Part 2: Reflection

After writing up the responses to the interview questions, write a  reflection of the interview experience. The reflection should share some  of the insights that you discovered about the problem through the  interview process and some of the additional thoughts that were inspired  regarding the problem due to some of the stakeholder’s responses. Your  response to each bulleted question should be approximately 100 words (a  4-5 sentence paragraph).

  1. What was something useful you learned that will help you write the paper?
  2. What did you learn that confirms your prior knowledge from your research?
  3. What information surprised you?
  4. How did the insights you learned from the interview help you understand your research problem better?

Part 1 and Part 2 should be included in the same document, which you will submit to the Stakeholder Interview and Reflection Dropbox.
