Unit 6 Discussion

Previous Next

Your active participation in Discussion Boards is critical to the development of your understanding of the main concepts studied in this unit. Further, posting detailed responses allows your professor to guide your thinking and your classmates to respond to your ideas. Please participate as early in the week as possible, and be sure to share your thoughts and ideas as often as you can throughout the unit.

Respond to the Discussion topic below. Your original response should be at least 350 words and should reflect the fact that you have completed the assigned Readings for the week. Remember, this is your chance to illustrate not only your understanding, but also your mastery of the materials for the unit. Use your words wisely so the posting has substance and includes examples and explanations. Limit the use of direct quotes, and do your best to critically evaluate and synthesize the literature in your own words wherever possible. Make sure to include in-text citations and a reference list as appropriate.

In this unit’s Discussions, you will work to integrate developmental theory to practice by exploring typical adolescent development and the issues faced by them.

Discussion Topic

Read the scenario below and use your understanding of adolescent social, cultural, and cognitive development to respond to the questions. Try to evaluate the main problem in the scenario and then use any of the theories or concepts from your Reading to support your response. Be sure you have read the article by Dahl before responding to this Discussion Board.

Scenario: Manny

You work as a psychologist in a substance abuse agency and treat adolescents who are alcoholics. Your new client, Manny, is a 14-year-old Hispanic male who lives with his grandmother in a two-room apartment in a poor section of the city. He is physically small for his age and seems to struggle with academic skills (he is functionally illiterate according to the intake assessor). When asked why he drinks, he simply looks at his shoes and shrugs. In fact, he really does not provide much information about anything, which you know is typical of most adolescents. You have noticed that he does become animated when you ask about his grandmother, music, and cars. He was arrested for public drunkenness and assigned to your outpatient treatment program as part of his rehabilitation.

In this session, he finally tells you more about himself and his troubles. He tells you that he has not attended his classes at the high school (he is a freshman) in over 2 weeks. Now, he is afraid to return because he thinks that he will be in trouble and that they may not allow him to return. He says that he realizes that getting an education will help him to leave his neighborhood someday for a better life. He wants to know what to do.

  1. Given what you know about adolescent development, assess Manny’s main problems. Predict which of the problems might worsen without proper intervention and support your ideas using the concepts/theories from your Readings.

Create a short dialogue of what you would say to Manny to help him to identify his real problem. Then, guide him towards understanding what the real problem for him is, focusing on how his biological development might be interfering with his social development

Create a case study, 250-500-words involving a   fictitious couple experiencing the stages and characteristics of   romantic relationships.

Select a neurological, psychological, or neurodevelopmental disorder.

Write a 2,450- to 3,500-word paper comparing and contrasting three therapeutic interventions used to treat this disorder. Compare measures of effectiveness, such as validity, efficacy, symptom and behavior management, and recidivism. One therapy should be cognitive in nature, one should be pharmacological in nature, and the third should be an alternative therapeutic treatment.

Identify common symptoms associated with your disorder and rates of symptom reduction or management as reported with the three treatments. Based on your research, what would be your approach to treating the condition? Identify which treatments you would use. Explain why.

Analyze the neurophysiological underpinnings of diseases and disorders.

Examine contemporary attitudes toward the three treatments you selected.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Include 7 to 10 peer-reviewed sources.

Part 1: Create a Case Study

Create a case study, 250-500-words involving a   fictitious couple experiencing the stages and characteristics of   romantic relationships. Think of this case study as a   “story” that you are telling about the process the couple   goes through when building a relationship.

Do not use any personal information or information   related to current cases you are working on.

Part 2: Summary of Each Stage

After completing the case study, write a 250-500 word   summary in which you explain each stage the couple experienced,   including the characteristics associated with each.

Include at least three scholarly references in your paper.

Submit the case study and the summary as one document.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines   found in the APA Style Guide

Identify the appropriate APA ethical codes and the specialty guidelines for forensic psychologists that may apply to the process of restoration.

Assignment 2: Competency Restoration

If criminal defendants are deemed incompetent to face a trial, they have the right to have their competency restored since they cannot be released without having a trial and they cannot be held indefinitely without being given the opportunity to become competent. Accordingly, it is important to state how they will be restored to competency.

Create a 3- to 4-page paper in a Microsoft Word document answering the two parts of this assignment.

Part 1:

CST has long been a sought-out legal procedure. Identify a landmark case decision that has played a factor in this process and address the following issues:

  • Explain the process of competency restoration.
  • Describe why the process of competency restoration is important.
  • Discuss one landmark case decision that has played a role in the process of restoration.

Part 2:

Elaborate on your discussion by including the process of restoration in the forensic arena.

In your report, address the following:

  • Identify the appropriate APA ethical codes and the specialty guidelines for forensic psychologists that may apply to the process of restoration.
  • Examine the limits to confidentiality.
  • Identify the factors that might impede competency restoration.

Your responses should rely upon at least three scholarly resources from the professional literature that are cited in APA format. The literature may include the Argosy University online library resources; relevant textbooks; peer-reviewed journal articles; and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu and .gov).

Choose two (2) theoretical models to explain Steven’s clinical  presentation and suggested treatment modalities.  Support your ideas by  discussing the models directly and specifically to Steven.

Vignette Analysis I
Please keep your responses focused on what is presented in the  vignettes. Do not add information but use your creativity to support  what you see in the vignettes as written.  Avoid elaborations and  assumptions. This assignment MUST be typed, double-spaced, in APA style,  and must be written at graduate-level English.
Use the reading assignments thoroughly in an integrative discussion.  Remember to reference all work cited or quoted by the text author. You  should be doing this often in your responses. If you use outside resources, they should support the text information, but not replace the text.
You are encouraged to use the DSM-5 Level 2 Assessment Measure(s) to formulate your diagnosis:
http://www.psychiatry.org/practice/dsm/dsm5/online-assessment-measures#Level2
All discussions must take into account the legal and ethical  considerations, as well as issues of culture and human diversity that  may pertain to the vignettes below.  Legal and Ethical information  is in Chapter 16 of the course text. Cultural information is covered  throughout the course text and DSM 5. You may use alternative cultural  resources to enhance your work.
Your assignment should be 3-4 pages plus a title and reference page.
Steven is a 28 year old male. His father was  African-American and his mother was Hispanic-American. Steven grew up in  East Los Angeles where gang activity was prominent. The oldest of 3  boys, Steven spent most of his childhood looking out for his 2 younger  brothers. Both parents were alcoholics and “disinterested in us kids”.   At age 19, Steven moved by himself to a major East Coast city where he  attended college and is doing well as an architect.  He is currently  married to a woman he met in college. The couple is expecting their  first child.
Steven comes to therapy upon the suggestion of his  primary care physician due to chronic worry, anticipation of failure and  fear that he will not be able to financially care for his wife and new  baby, in spite of his lucrative and successful career. He also has  ruminative thoughts, that that he is a facade and that, “people will  find out who I really am.”
Steven tells you that lately he has gotten dizzy when  driving on the highway and recently experienced the inability to breathe  when at the mall with his wife.  He also tells you that sometimes when  he closes his eyes, he sees his parents “beating each other up and can  hear them screaming.”  He also discloses that sometimes he wakes up at  night with clenched fists and feels like that scared little boy all over  again. Lately he has been unable to leave the house without making sure  the door is locked several times and avoids odd numbered streets on the  way to work.
1. Formulate a Differential Diagnosis for Steven.  What comorbid  disorders might you see?  Support your ideas by discussing what you see  in the vignette utilizing your course readings thoroughly in your diagnostic formulation.  What information would you look for to confirm your diagnostic impression and why?
2. Choose two (2) theoretical models to explain Steven’s clinical  presentation and suggested treatment modalities.  Support your ideas by  discussing the models directly and specifically to Steven.
(Remember to consider culture, law and ethics when diagnosing and treating)
