Application: Challenges in Contemporary Youth Culture

Children and adolescents face multiple challenges as a result of attempting to adhere to the norms of their youth culture. For example, an adolescent attending a party might feel pressured by friends to use drugs or drink alcohol. As a future child and adolescent counselor, you must develop empathy and understanding of the pressures and expectations of adhering to child and adolescent cultural norms and the various ways adhering to these norms might impact a child or adolescent.

For this Application Assignment, select a film depicting contemporary child or adolescent culture. As you view the film you selected, consider the types and amount of challenges the children or adolescents faced in the film. Consider how the challenges might impact your ability to develop empathy as a child and adolescent counselor.

The assignment (2–3 pages):

  • Based on the film, explain      three challenges children or adolescents faced while attempting to adhere      to and/or cope with normative youth culture.
  • Explain two ways you might      develop empathy related to the children and/or adolescents in the film. Be      specific.
  • Explain one way you might      address one of the challenges children or adolescents faced in the film      and how and justify your response.
  • Explain any insights you had      related to your understanding of contemporary youth culture based upon the      film you selected. Be specific.

Describe  the three most important Hindu deities found in the Trimurti, their  history of development in the Vedic literature, and their functions in  the kalpic cycle of life.

If possible, interview a  practicing Hindu individual or a leader of a Hindu temple, which can be  used as an academic resource. If you would like to take pictures during  your visit to this community or place of worship, be sure to obtain  permission.

Write an essay of 1,250-1,500 words that analyzes key beliefs in Hinduism by addressing the following concepts:

  1. Describe  the three most important Hindu deities found in the Trimurti, their  history of development in the Vedic literature, and their functions in  the kalpic cycle of life.
  2. Make an analysis of how the caste  system might function in the life of a particular Hindu individual as he  or she interacts with individuals of other castes.
  3. Select one  ancient or modern Christian community living or serving in a Hindu  context, such as the St. Thomas Church of South India, denominations and  ministries started by William Carey, Mother Teresa’s Sisters of  Charity, etc. Compare the principles and practices of this Christian  community with the four key Hindu beliefs and practices: all pervasive  divinity, karma, reincarnation, and dharma.
  4. Taking into  consideration the differences between the four key Hindu beliefs and  practices and Christian doctrine, how might a Christian engage a  follower of Hinduism with the gospel of Jesus Christ? What would be  vital points to consider for such a conversation (e.g., Who God is, sin  and the fall, Jesus, forgiveness, salvation)?

Utilize the  course textbook and a minimum of four academic resources, one of which  can be your interview and should include topic materials and  external resources.

Explain how you will resolve the situation, given the department chair agrees with the student who filed the complaint.

Assume that a major component of an undergraduate course in child growth and development you are teaching involves the Signature Assignment. This assignment requires you to relate the Eriksonian stages to autobiographical data and biographical information of family members. One of your students refuses to disclose anything personal and claims you are in violation of ethics Standard 7.04. Since you are unwilling to change the requirement, the student files a complaint with the department chair.

Create a transcript of the dialogue between you and the department chair, Dr. Kweigg, who supports the student. Examine the possible conflicts between your assignment criteria and Standard 7.04, providing specific examples to support your reasoning for not changing the assignment. Explain how you will resolve the situation, given the department chair agrees with the student who filed the complaint.

In your argument, you must demonstrate that the autobiographical component is necessary to achieve the stated course outcomes. You also need to explain how this requirement was clearly identified in the course description. You are expected to provide the opposing argument from Dr. Kweigg.

Support your assignment with at least three scholarly or professional resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.

For the last two modules, you have been using a template called the Science Tool Kit to guide your work in analyzing news articles that bring the public information from scientific research. In this module, we are expanding our definition of science to include technology and engineering, since they are crucial in considering our energy resources, needs, and plans for the future of our planet.

For this assignment, we will drill down (pun intended) on the controversies that surround hydraulic fracturing, typically shortened to “hydro-fracking”, for natural gas. This process is not new, but technological innovations in recent years have made it a much more practical and widespread technique to obtain natural gas. Fracking has supporters and detractors, but many states are now allowing fracking, and the practice is so widespread and effective that the prices for natural gas have fallen precipitously in recent years. However, there have been a host of environmental concerns with the rapid increase in the use of fracking. These include health issues created by water and air pollutants, damage to once wild and pristine environments that cannot be undone, and also earthquakes.

This assignment asks you to analyze an article from a Houston newspaper by A. Kuchment that reviews recent research on the increase in the number of earthquakes in Texas. This increase has apparently been linked to the increased use of fracking techniques. The US Geologic Survey has also published information on this issue.
