Discuss the importance of trust during negotiations? How do you exhibit it? How do you know when to trust others? What can you do if you don’t trust the other side?

Are you able to answer answer 10 of the 16 questions below?

1. Getting to Yes and your Manual readings suggest that “there can be no negotiation without communication.” Assuming that this is more than a cliché, what does this mean? Discuss communication variables and barriers that are important to understanding negotiation success and negotiator effectiveness.

2. In negotiations, truthfulness (honesty, veracity, etc.) seems to be a low priority or get lost entirely. How do determine what is ethical conduct in negotiation? Other than our own sense of ethics, what constraints or reasons do you see to avoid questionable conduct?

3. What is your definition of negotiation? Distinguish it from other dispute resolution processes. Is negotiation involved in and/or part of those processes?

4. Based on the readings, what is your understanding of integrative bargaining? What is the contrasting type of bargaining? Describe the essential differences. Do people need to select one mode or the other as their style? Why or why not?

5. What are the “Top Ten” characteristics of a good negotiator? Prioritize them and indicate why you rank them this way? Which are you working on and how?

6. Describe the importance of non-verbal behavior in understanding negotiation? How do you recognize, use, and/or respond to it?

7. If you are faced with a negotiation “opponent” who appears to have more power resources than you do, what are some steps or approached you can take to improve your chances?

8. Emotions and/or personal involvement can both help and/or hinder a negotiation. Discuss how “feelings” can have a positive or negative impact and can be “used” by a negotiator.

9. What would be your advice for a new negotiator (e.g., some do’s and don’t`s)? Give them a good start. Use a “top ten” list format if you like (but give more than Letterman one-liners).

10. Discuss the importance of trust during negotiations? How do you exhibit it? How do you know when to trust others? What can you do if you don’t trust the other side?

11. Negotiating one-on-one is hard and team negotiating can be even harder and more frustrating. What can you do to ensure the benefits of a team and avoid the problems?

12. What is the “prisoner’s dilemma? What does it suggest, and/or teach, about negotiating and strategy?

13. What are several specific techniques or methods can you use to elicit (obtain) information from the other side?

14. When dealing with a representative in negotiation, how do you know whether he or she has authority to bind the other party? How do you ensure this?

15. What steps would you take in preparing to negotiate with someone of a substantially different background (e.g., culture)? What are some “Do’s” and “Don’ts”?

16. From a purely practical standpoint, discuss why you should be concerned about stereotypes you have about people with whom you are negotiating.

Explain in 3 to 4 sentences how your personal values, worldviews, life experiences, and/or your personality influenced your selection of the top three theories or models.

Developing self-awareness starts with taking time to reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses, what distresses you, and what you find most comfortable in social work practice with your clients and colleagues. You have read about many theories and models at this point. There may have been theories and models that you were more inclined to use. Or there may have been theories and models you were not comfortable using.

The Theoretical Evaluation Self-Test (TEST) was developed by Daniel Coleman. It is a quantitative instrument that measures a therapist’s theoretical orientation. It consists of 30 close-ended statements with a 7-point Likert scale, asking the extent of agreement about “psychotherapy, the human psyche, and the therapeutic process” (Coleman, 2003, p. 74). The seven theoretical orientations that are measured are psychodynamic, biological, family systems, ecosystems, cognitive, pragmatic, and humanistic.

Coleman (2003) cautions that the TEST is not meant to give therapists a conclusive and definitive sense of their theoretical orientation. Rather, the goal is to promote self-reflection about their personal tendencies toward approaching therapy.

For this Discussion, you take the TEST to stimulate self-reflection. You will also take some time to reflect on all the different theories and models covered in this course.

To prepare: Take the TEST. There is both a web-based version, noted in the Learning Resources, and a paper version of the TEST.

By Day 3

Post:

  • After taking the TEST, post your results.
  • Explain in 2 to 3 sentence the extent to which you were surprised or not surprised by the TEST results, and explain the reasons why you were surprised or not surprised.
  • After looking back at the array of theories and models that were covered in this course, identify the top three theories or models that most appealed to you.
  • Explain in 3 to 4 sentences how your personal values, worldviews, life experiences, and/or your personality influenced your selection of the top three theories or models.
  • In this course, you were asked to select one case study to use throughout the entire course. Describe this experience—for example, the degree to which it was helpful to focus on one case, what you learned, what could perhaps be done differently.

Summarize research from at least two peer-reviewed* studies on the effect of minority status on identity development, ensuring you describe the main findings of the study as well as the research methods used to study the topic. (e.g., Who was studied?

Assignment 2: LASA 2 Identity Formation

We have learned that adolescence is a time of transition between childhood and adulthood. A critical milestone of this stage is the ability to successfully achieve a sense of identity. Around the world, there are different rites of passage to mark the transition to adulthood. In the United States, this might include obtaining a driver’s license, landing one’s first job, senior prom, or high school graduation. In this assignment, we will explore the role that family and society play in the development of the individual’s sense of self.

Tasks:

By the due date assigned, create two deliverables for parents of minority teens:

  • A 9–12-slide Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (complete with speaker’s notes) and
  • An accompanying 1–2-page handout in Word document or PDF format.

Be sure that both illustrate the following:

  • Describe common rites of passage from two cultures around the world and compare them to a common American rite of passage. Possible resources might include National Geographic and the Argosy University online library resources. (This should only be a few slides maximum. Think about it as an introduction to the “meat” of your presentation)
  • Compare and contrast these rites to common US rites of passage. Do they coincide with the physical, cognitive, or socioemotional changes taking place at this age? Describe which specific changes (physical, cognitive, or socioemotional) they coincide with. Does this explain their importance in a particular culture? (This is where you need to really show an understanding of adolescent development)
  • How might such a social ritual, such as a rite of passage, influence the identity formation process of adolescents?
  • In light of Erikson and Marcia’s theories, discuss how the process of identity development is affected when the adolescent belongs to a minority group (racial, ethnic, sexual, or religious). Be sure to explain these theories and how they apply to identity development.
  • Summarize research from at least two peer-reviewed* studies on the effect of minority status on identity development, ensuring you describe the main findings of the study as well as the research methods used to study the topic. (e.g., Who was studied? What were their main questions? How were they studied? What did they find?)
  • Apply the information you gathered from the online notes, textbook, and research articles to provide at least three practical recommendations for what the family, school, and community can do to ease the process for adolescents.

The Handout

The handout should not be an APA-formatted paper. It’s just a 1-2–page summary, which could be in bullet point form, formatted as a brochure. It’s something you would hand out to your audience to take with them that highlights the important points from your presentation. Imagine that your presentation will be to a group of teachers or parents, teaching them about identity development in adolescence. What would be helpful for them to review when they go home? It should not be merely the notes version of the PowerPoint presentation. It needs to be in Microsoft Word or Publisher format. It is usually a good idea to include your references with your handout so the audience can go back and follow up with the sources you used if they want to.

The Presentation

For your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, make sure you are using the speaker’s notes. This is the blank space beneath each slide. If you do not see a blank space, click on the bottom of your slide and drag up—you should see it now. This is where you will elaborate and explain the points on your slide. If you do not use the speaker’s notes to expand and explain, it is unlikely you will sufficiently meet all the requirements.

*Peer-reviewed means an article from a reputable journal, which can be found in the Argosy University online library resources. Peer reviewed indicates that other professionals in the field have reviewed and deemed it worthy of publication, in contrast to much if what we find online: someone posting something he or she wants to, without someone else verifying that the research methods were rigorous enough and the study is valid. Use your textbook and course lectures as your primary resources, as well as articles from the Argosy University online library resources. If you must supplement from a website, do not use .coms. Instead, look for .org, .gov, and sometimes .edu for more reputable sources. Never use Wikipedia or about.com.

This assignment is worth 300 points and will be evaluated according to the rubric. Study the rubric carefully before you start work and refer to it periodically to complete this assignment.
