How was the lighting technique suited to the genre of the film? For example, documentary films tend to rely on natural light as a way of creating an overall tone of authenticity.

Assignment 1 (300 words)

As you prepare to write this discussion, take a few moments to do the following:

  • Review the Modeled Discussion.
  • Read any required and recommended reading materials for this week, especially Chapter 4 from your text and the articles by Grant and Wright.
  • Select a full-length film from the AFI 10 Top 10 list.   http://www.afi.com/10top10/

Reflect

Genre, a category of artistic production characterized by similarities in composition and style, is a term used to discuss literature, music, art, and film. It is particularly useful in critical applications because it distinguishes a work within a context of similar works. In film, we are familiar with certain broad genre categories such as horror, science-fiction, romance, and drama.

Understanding genre helps provide the viewer with certain expectations about film. For instance, the film The Conjuring trailer (Version 2) is of the horror genre and thus can be discussed in context with other horror films. More specifically, it is of the sub-genre, supernatural horror, so it can be discussed in context with, say, The Exorcist trailer. Making this distinction enables the audience to situate their reaction within a particular framework.

Write

Identify a film and classify it according to its genre (or sub-genre). Include a link(s) to a trailer or scene(s) from the film. You may choose to continue with a film you have already discussed.

  • Discuss the conventions that are typical in films of that genre (or sub-genre).
  • Explain how this specific film meets the expectations of its genre.

Include the name or partial name of the film you identified in the “Subject” line of your discussion. Your initial post should be at least 300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Assignment 2  (300 words)

Mise en scène is a term meant to encompass the arrangement and use of a variety of design elements in creating the visual theme of a film. Please look through Chapter 5 (Mise en Scene and Actors) for more information on this term.

As you prepare to write this discussion, take a few moments to do the following:

  • Read any required and recommended reading materials for this week, especially Chapter 5 (Mise en Scene and Actors).
  • Select a full-length film from the AFI 10 Top 10 list.  http://www.afi.com/10top10/

Reflect

It can be easier to grasp the importance of the term mise en scène if we break it down into its component elements. This week, we’ll look at the impact of lighting choices on the creation of meaning in a film.

In any film, the intensity and direction of lighting will influence how an image is perceived by the viewer, and it can establish or enforce particular themes. Think back over films you have watched and consider how the use of lighting in key scenes helped establish the theme or tone.

Please view the video Adding Pictures and Video to Discussions and Introductions for guidance on how to integrate multimedia with your response.

Using specific examples from your chosen film, write a post in which you

  • Identify the type of lighting used in the film (traditional three-point, high-key, or low-key) and assess the impact of the lighting used to establish the theme.
    • What are the benefits of the style of lighting used?
    • How did this technique contribute to the theme?
    • How was the lighting technique suited to the genre of the film? For example, documentary films tend to rely on natural light as a way of creating an overall tone of authenticity.
  • Compare how the scene would play if different choices had been made.

You must use at least two outside sources, in any combination of embedded video clips, still photos, or scholarly sources. All sources should be documented in APA style.

It is suggested that you approach this post by focusing your attention on the same film you will write about in this week’s “Genres and Genre Film” assignment.

Summarize concepts and theories that you learned in the text, articles, or Internet sources. Use others’ ideas, theories, and concepts in constructing discussion question responses or completing projects.

  • Provide a one-paragraph history about Sandra’s life to this point.
  • Using your textbook, define Erikson’s stage of Integrity and Despair in the Theory of Psychosocial Development.
    • Identify whether Sandra is in Integrity or Despair.
    • Explain how this transition crisis may be resolved by a HSP conducting a life review with Sandra.
  • Using  Sandra’s ecomap that you created in the Unit 8 Assignment, select at  least two systems (influences) in her environment that are causing the  most stress and negative influence on Sandra’s behavior and  decision-making.
  • Using  the textbook, define Stress Theory and explain at least two  recommendations a HSP could make to Sandra to help her cope with her  trauma/stress that may help her meet her goal of a long life expectancy.
  • If  Sandra provided consent to contact her family, do you believe that  involving her adult children would positively impact her family system?  Explain why or why not, using specific support from the case study.
  • What role could Sandra’s adult children play in helping Sandra cope with her trauma/stress?
  • Identify  the name and contact information for one human services agency that  serves older adults, which may provide assistance to Sandra and her  family.
    • Provide  specific detail on how this agency would help Sandra and her family  with their current stressors, including describing the specific services  that the agency provides.
  • Considering  all you have learned in HN144, what are some best practice approaches  that a human service professional could use to help a multigenerational  family experiencing a negative environment?

Identify some of the limitations or concerns that may result from using diagnostic tests (both nationally standardized and CBM) when working with all students, as well as students suspected as having a learning disability.

Using the Right Tool for the Right Job

In this unit, you read about changes over time in the procedures for evaluating SLDs. Recently, most states changed their existing rules and regulations to include an RTI model, which identifies three levels of intervention or teaching to facilitate learning for all students. Subsequently, it became important to determine tests or assessments, which would provide monitoring or progress within each level of instructional intervention. However, this model for teaching has now been utilized as a method for identifying students as having a learning disability.

You were also introduced to a number of diagnostic measures for monitoring progress, which included nationally standardized tests, as well as locally normed standardized measurement procedures called CBM. In addition, the authors of your Psychological Testing and Assessment text presented several questions or concerns regarding the use of diagnostic tests when working with individuals suspected as having a learning disability.

Based on your unit readings, complete the following for this discussion:

  • Outline the concerns that may exist with using an RTI model when identifying students suspected as having a learning disability.
  • Identify some of the limitations or concerns that may result from using diagnostic tests (both nationally standardized and CBM) when working with all students, as well as students suspected as having a learning disability.
  • Identify some of the strengths in using these tests or measurements for progress monitoring.
  • Summarize this information and present a recommendation for the use of the RTI model, nationally standardized diagnostic tests, locally normed CBM, and intelligence and academic achievement tests, and their role in monitoring educational progress and identification of a learning disability.

Be sure to cite specific AERA standards for educational testing and assessment that have direct bearing on this discussion; in particular, assessments serving multiple purposes, and informing teaching and learning.

Review Chapter 8 in your course text, Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences. Pay particular attention to the difference between Type I and Type II errors.

Type I and Type II Errors

Statisticians and researchers are human, and therefore, make mistakes in the conduct of their research. Type I and Type II errors are important to consider as they have real-world implications. A Type I error refers to rejecting a null hypothesis when it is true, while a Type II error results from failing to reject a null hypothesis when it is false. The following hypothetical situation illustrates these errors and the null hypothesis:

A forensic psychologist must decide whether to allow John Hinckley, Jr. to go to his parents’ house on a weekend pass. Mr. Hinckley, as you recall, attempted to assassinate President Reagan at the Washington Hilton in 1981, just to impress actress Jody Foster with whom he was obsessed. Mr. Hinckley has been writing letters to Miss Foster as recently as last month. The letters were found under his mattress during a routine inspection of his room at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. The hospital has convened a panel of seven mental health professionals, all of whom work at the hospital and with Mr. Hinckley. The votes are in: Three say let him go visit his parents and three vote to deny his weekend pass request. What should the forensic psychologist decide? The null hypothesis in this case would be that it is safe to send him home for the weekend. If he is denied the visit when in reality he would not have caused any problems, a Type I error (also called a false positive) would have been made. It was determined that he would be dangerous when he would not have been. A Type II error (or a false negative) would result if it was determined that he would not be violent and he was released, and he ended up assaulting someone on his weekend pass. In that case, it was believed that nothing would happen and it did.

Forensic psychology research also may exhibit Type I and Type II errors, as you discover in this Discussion.

  • Review Chapter 8 in your course text, Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences. Pay particular attention to the difference between Type I and Type II errors.
  • Review the web article, “ Type I and Type II Errors—Making Mistakes in the Justice System.” Pay close attention to the descriptions and examples of Type I and Type II errors.
  • Using the Walden Library, select and review a research article that addresses a forensic psychology issue or takes place in a forensic setting, and that reports or discusses a Type I or Type II error.
  • Think about the possible consequences to the research study of making each type of error.
  • Consider whether the resulting consequences of making each type of error would be tolerable or not and why.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post a brief summary of the study you selected. Then, explain how and why the study reports the possibility of either a Type I or Type II error. Finally, explain the potential consequence to the research study of making either a Type I or a Type II error and which is more “ tolerable” and why.
