Oratorical Leaders And The Magic Of Sterotypes

Assignment 2: Oratorical Leaders and the Magic of Stereotypes

No one gets through life alone. To some extent, we are all products of our environments. We learn from our families, schools, and cultures. Every person has to face severe challenges and conquer obstacles. How we face our challenges depends on how we are shaped by others and our strength of character.

Certain individuals in our society have played powerful roles in the evolution of prevailing norms. While we learn our culture from agents of socialization, great leaders with lofty visions lead people and nations in the direction of emancipation, economic prosperity, and political freedom. Each of the following speeches tells the story of a struggle and its leader. Each speech echoes the aspirations of thousands of people as well as their desire to change their social situations.

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate the power of stereotypes as a shorthand communication tool. With great economy of words, each speaker uses stereotypes to frame the audience into an in-group of which he or she is the leader and the out-group on the opposing side.

Part 1: Read transcripts of famous speeches

Access the following speeches located in the AUO Library:

  • King, M. (2004). ‘I have a dream’. New African, (435), 67-67.
    http://search.proquest.com.libproxy.edmc.edu/docview/230228033
  • Cullis-Suzuki, S. (1994). An appeal for future generations. Earth Island Journal, 9(3), 14-14.
    http://search.proquest.com.libproxy.edmc.edu/docview/213829553

Part 2: Research other famous speeches

Explore various resources to research other famous speeches related to stereotyping and prejudice. Some suggestions are below. You may be able to find these speeches in video, audio, or text format. Try using a variety of search methods including visiting your local library, using Netflix or your local video store, or searching on YouTube. (You might also try locating the videos for the two famous speeches listed in Part 1 of this assignment.)

  • Malcolm X: By Any Means Necessary
  • Mahatma Gandhi: Nonviolence speech from the film Gandhi
  • Gandhi’s definition on Satyagraha

Part 3: Write a Paper

For this assignment, select one of the above speakers/speech and prepare a 1200- to 1500-word paper that answers the following questions:

  • Why did you select this particular speaker? Explain in around 300 words.
  • Which is the in-group, and what are the unifying values or the ascribed status that provides its solidarity? Explain in around 300 words.
  • What stereotype—prejudice, subordination, or discrimination—is the in-group challenging? Provide specific examples and explain in around 300 words.
  • In your view, did members of the in-group conspire to subordinate the
out-group, or was the in-group merely operating within the social structure of its time? Explain in around 300 words.
  • How have your attitudes toward prejudice, subordination, or discrimination been influenced by the agents of socialization, such as family, peer groups, schools, and the media? Explain in around 300 words.

Provide a minimum of 3 references and apply the correct APA standards in the formatting of text, citations, and references.

Provide a 1-page description of a stressful event currently occurring in your life. Then, referring to information you learned throughout this course, address the following:

  • What physiological changes occur in the brain due to the stress response?
  • What emotional and cognitive effects might occur due to this stressful situation?

  • What three behavioral strategies would you implement to reduce the effects of this stressor? Describe each strategy. Explain how each behavior could cause changes in brain physiology (e.g., exercise can raise serotonin levels).
  • If you were encouraging an adult client to make the above changes, what ethical considerations would you have to keep in mind? How would you address those ethical considerations?

In addition to citing the online course and the text, you are also required to cite a minimum of two scholarly sources. Please see the Academic Resources section under Course Home to use the Argosy University online library to find appropriate scholarly sources. Unit 9 Discussion

What strategies can you use to ensure that parents/caregivers feel welcome and comfortable at the beginning of the conference?

I always start by explain to the parents that first and foremost every child develops differently because I know some parent like to compete with other children. Then explain why we are meeting in regards to the child, and then also share some positive news about the child progressing from then to know.

What strategies can you use when sharing assessment information with the parents/caregivers? Why did you choose these strategies?

The first thing that I am going to do is get copies of everything and have them ready to give to the parents so that they know exactly where he was at the beginning of the school year and where he is now. Then I would provide them with any resources information that would be of help. I would keep everything as positive as possible because then the parents would be comfortable and open with the information that we are sharing together. Why did you choose these strategies? The reason I chose this strategy is because parents are sometimes in denial and feel like they are being judged and that is the last thing that I would want them to feel. I want them comfortable enough to where they open on their concerns and that they could understand the information that I am providing.

What method can you use to summarize the student’s progress?

I would have all the scores and graphs that show where he was compared to other children in his class at the beginning of the year and where he is now. This would allow me to show them that they are not the only parents with a child that needs additional services or help in school. I would then have a game plan of where we need to provide additional assistance with Koi and how we can help the parents with open communication and specific strategies at home that would be the same as if the child was in the classroom.

What role do the parents/caregivers have in the conference?

The parents and the caregivers are a team in the child educational life and the two people must be able to come up with a system to help the child get to their potential needs.

How could you share results that may be perceived by the parents/caregivers as negative?

I would first state the progress of the child then I would announce the areas that may need work, I would never state a positive and negative it’s never a negative it’s always a progression.

unit 9 discussion

Hello Professor and Classmates,

What strategies can you use to ensure that parents/caregivers feel welcome and comfortable at the beginning of the conference?

At the beginning of a conference you always want the parents to feel welcome to come in to talk to you in the classroom. As Koi’s parents come into the room I will make sure that I have his folder of information ready on the table. I will then proceed to ask the parents how Koi is at home. How is his interaction with his brother’s or sister’s is his behavior different when he comes home from school? I would make sure that his parents know that this is a conference about the assessment of their child and that there is no labeling. I would then discuss a plan that we can come up with to help this child and so that we are both on the same page. Thank the parents for coming to the conference and always thank them for not assuming that we had the conference because stuff is going wrong.

What strategies can you use when sharing assessment information with the parents/caregivers? Why did you choose these strategies?

First I would make sure that I had all information ready for koi parents. I would plan out what I am going to say so that I don’t come off as if I don’t know what I am talking about. I would then start off by explaining to koi’s parents what the (DIAL-4) is and how we score the child. I would then again tell them that this is all confidential. I would make sure that I present his parents with all the positive before having to explain his weakness in the areas he needs help in.

What method can you use to summarize the student’s progress?

The method that I would use to best describe the students’ progress would be the sandwich method. You always want to start but talking about the positive then move to the areas and concerns that you have for that child and then always make sure to end with more positive information. When talking to the parents you need to make sure that the parents never feel that you are bashing or labeling their child in anyway.

What role do the parents/caregivers have in the conference?

The role that the parents and caregivers have in a conference is to make sure that they keep the teacher updated with any information that would affect the child. They should be able to ask any question that pertains to their child. They should also be able to relay any information about the child at home such as the child behavior. They could also give the teacher some tips about what works best with their child and what the teacher should work on. They should also be able to ask about having better learning for that child and to make it a little more challenging for them.

How could you share results that may be perceived by the parents/caregivers as negative?

You always want to reinsure the parents that this is only an assessment of the child through our eyes and not a professional. You always want to make sure to tell them that if they would like a further assessment that they are welcome to seek a professional and you could give them recommendations. Always let the parents give their input and never tell them that they are wrong about their child. Make sure to be honest and take into consideration that it is their child and they have first say about any concerns.

Diversity Issues In Careet Counseling

Diversity Issues in Career Counseling

In this unit you explored five different cultural groups and the need for cultural competence. As was discussed by Zunker, we must understand our own assumptions, values, and biases, as well as the world view of others; and then develop appropriate strategies and interventions. The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of cultural competence, your limitations as they relate to career counseling, and your plan to develop the needed skills.

For this assignment, choose a cultural group of which you are not a member and create a persona for a fictitious member of that group. Address the following elements in your assignment:

  • Describe a fictitious persona from your chosen cultural group, that you will use as your client or student. For example, if you are an African-American male you may choose to write about a person who identifies as female, Navajo American Indian, married with five children, living on a reservation, forty years old with a high school education.
  • Analyze how societal norms such as gender, age, culture, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics may have influenced your client’s career development. You need to select a minimum of three characteristics or diversity issues. How might these factors impact the person’s relationships with others and life roles? What strategies would you use?
  • Assess how biases and assumptions can impact the career counseling process both from your perspective as the counselor and from the perspective of the client or student.
  • Self-assess your own biases and describe how you will work to decrease these biases when working with diverse populations.

Your assignment should be 4–5 pages in length, include at least three references, and follow APA style and format. Review the Diversity Issues in Career Counseling Scoring Guide to understand the grading criteria for this assignment.

Abstract

Here you are to summarize the contents of this paper. This summary should be one short paragraph that includes the purpose of this assignment, the name of the cultural group, and the list of this assignment’s components in narrative (not list) form.

Unit 5 Assignment: Elements of an APA Paper

Start writing your introduction here (1–2 paragraphs). An effective introduction prepares the reader by identifying the purpose of the paper and providing the organization of the paper. Please double-space and remember to indent all paragraphs throughout your paper (not block form!). Aim to keep your writing objective using 3rd person. Unless required for the specific assignment, please do not include a Table of Contents, as it is not APA style. Review paper guidelines on page requirements and number of sources required. Unless citing a classic work, aim to cite research articles and texts published within the past 5 years. Please use headings throughout your paper that are consistent with the paper’s scoring guide (that way you ensure you are adequately addressing all required areas.).

When you finish writing your paper, re-read it to check for errors and make sure your ideas flow well. A helpful tip is to read your paper aloud to yourself. If it does not sound right to your ear – it is not working on paper! Please submit your papers to Turnitin (linked in the course) to check for plagiarism. Also, remember as a Capella learner you have FREE access through iGuide to personal tutoring services with Smarthinking.com.

Conclusion

Please provide a conclusion that summarizes the main ideas of your paper.

References

Begin your references on a separate page with the heading above (not bold). (Delete this and all these instructions when you are done reading them.) For this paper you are to have at least three references not including your text.

You must have a reference for EACH source cited in your paper. Do NOT list a reference that was not cited in your paper. Consult your APA manual for proper examples on citing and referencing APA style. The Capella Writing Center also has helpful tutorials.
