What type of government do you think Hobbes advocated? Why?

Discussion Questions Regarding Leviathan:

1. According to Hobbes in Leviathan, what is “the state of nature” and why might human beings be adverse to living in it? What is life in this state of nature like? There is a littany of adjectives he uses to describe life in the state of nature, and none of them are nice…

2. What kinds of freedoms (liberties) might a person enjoy in the state of nature? What conventional (to us) freedoms would a person likely NOT enjoy in the state of nature?

3. What two basic motivations exist for people in the state of nature? Do these instincts continue in some way after the social contract is formed? Is there innate good/evil/morality in the state of nature, or are these constructs of civil societies?

4. What is a “social contract” and why would we need one? What kinds of boundaries does it place on individual liberty? What are the tradeoffs involved in choosing life in society over life in “the state of nature”?

5. What type of government do you think Hobbes advocated? Why?

Discussion Questions Regarding Second Treatise of Government:

1. What was the style of government he felt best, and why?

2. What was Locke’s position on human beings’ ability to govern themselves? Did he feel they were innately too selfish, as Hobbes did? Did he feel that they needed God’s guidance? Did he feel that they needed an absolute sovereign?

3. What was Locke’s understanding of basic human liberties and natural rights? Which liberties did he feel were most fundamental and should therefore by preserved and served by government? Which liberties did he feel were worth giving up in order to attain the stability of life in civil society?

4. Once the social contract is made and a government is formed, does Locke believe that the people forfeit their influence on this government forever? Why/why not?

5. How did Locke’s views of human rights and purpose of government differ from Hobbes?

This topic will remain open for one week. There may be more than one unit covered during some weeks, with most units including more than one primary source reading, so pace yourself accordingly.

Contribute your answers, comments, and questions about the material in your reply/replies.  Everyone is required to contribute at least one post to each discussion thread, no less than 200 words of original content (preferably more). In other words, don’t just agree with other posters, fill up space with quotes, copy/paste/paraphrase the book/my slides/a page on the internet, or what have you.  You don’t necessarily have to address every single question, but you do need to make a concerted effort to think about and discuss the readings. You must address each primary source reading in some way.

You will receive up to ten points for meeting this requirement for each unit.  🙂 You can post more for the sake of good discussion, but you are only required to post one and you can only earn up to ten points for what you post no matter how many posts you make.

Remember, avoid chatspeak, use complete sentences, and save your work as you go along!

Reflect on the question by writing a 2-3 paragraph response.

Choose one of the questions from the list below.

1)      Reflect on the question by writing a 2-3 paragraph response.

2)      Include the reference (APA Formate) to an educational website other than Wikipedia that helped you to form your response, with a 2-3 sentence description of how this website enhanced your learning for the week.

3)      Select and add an image to your post that reflects your learning, including the specific reasons you chose the image.

Questions are:

  • Research and discuss other instances in which popular music and politics have intersected in impactful ways, as happened when Cui Jian performed at Tiananmen Square in 1989.
  • Use Internet keywords searches such as Chinese rock or Chinese punk to research the contemporary music scene in mainland China. Write a report chronicling your findings. Conclude with some general remarks applying what you have learned about historical processes of tradition and transformation in Chinese music to your assessment of current musical trends and directions in China.
  • Research and write a report on Chinese American/Asian American rock, pop, jazz, or hip-hop. Describe how traditional Asian elements are combined with other musical elements, instruments, and styles in the examples you encounter.
  • Compare the Republican and initial Communist eras of conservatory-based solo zheng traditions in mainland China. How did the roles of conservatories change, and what happened to the status of the zheng?
  • The relationship between musical developments and political movements in Chinese history is a major issue. Relationships between music and politics run deep in societies throughout the world. Where do you see instances of music being used in political context in your own society? Are the political uses of music which you are aware explict or implict, obvious or subtle? Why do you think you think music has been closely alighted with so many political regimes and institutions in so many societies throughout history?
  • Research and write a report on Chinese American/Asian American rock, pop, jazz, or hip-hop.  Describe how traditional Asian elements are combined with other musical elements, instruments, and styles in the examples you encounter.
  • How have Zen Buddhist ideas influenced music for shakuhachi?
  • Do you think that Japanese or Chinese traditional musical culture is more open to women’s participation? Why do you think so?  What challenges do both Chinese and Japanese women musicians face?  What unique challenges do women musicians from each country face?

Review the InTASC standards as they apply to this evaluation.

Assignment 1

After you have implemented each lesson in the unit, as well as completed the post-assessment, collaborate with your cooperating teacher/mentor to analyze the results of the post-assessment and determine student learning. Review your data and whether there is a student or group of students who have not mastered the objectives, and discuss what you will do to further develop students’ knowledge and skills.

Complete the Post-Test and Post-Assessment tables in STEP Standard 6. Respond to the questions in Standard 6 based on the assessment results.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

Assignment 2

Review the InTASC standards as they apply to this evaluation. Be prepared to discuss the standards with your GCU faculty supervisor during the second observation and the importance to the professional educator.

The GCU faculty supervisor will observe your teaching performance and complete the Clinical Practice Evaluation 2. For this assignment, you will submit the completed Clinical Practice Evaluation 2 to the LMS. The final score on your evaluation will determine your total points for this assignment.

Assignment 3

At this stage in the unit development, you have aligned student learning to state, national, and technology standards, and assessed your students’ knowledge and abilities related to your targeted content.

Collaborate with your cooperating teacher/mentor to design a unit of instruction that aligns to state content standards. Include technology integration and demonstrate how you will differentiate your lessons to meet the needs of individual students. Implement your unit and analyze data to determine learning outcomes.

Follow the instructions found in the STEP Template. Complete STEP Standards 3-5 that includes the following:

  • Assessment and Data Literacy
  • Unit and Lesson planning
  • Implementation of Instructional Unit: Create a video using any video recording device. Choose one of the lesson activities to video record a 5-10 minute segment to review and reflect on your teaching. Have your cooperating teacher/mentor review the recording and provide feedback, if possible.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

Assignment 4

Reflective practice is crucial in education and becomes the foundation for ongoing growth and development as a professional. Once you have implemented the lessons within your unit, you should reflect on how the instructional practices influenced the learning outcomes. The assessment data provides tangible evidence that you can use to tie outcomes back to instruction. You should also determine what revisions you could make to the design of the unit in order to improve student learning.

After analyzing and reflecting on your experiences developing and delivering your instructional unit, complete STEP Standard 7. In the template, list three short-term goals to improve specific areas of your teaching practice based on the unit of instruction, as well as your plan to reach each short-term goal.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
