PART A (6 marks)

Transform three of the four Learning Objectives at the beginning of Chapter 2 of your textbook into grammatically correct topic sentences. Each topic sentence must represent a different one of the six strategies for developing topic sentences covered Lesson 3—the lesson is in the course not the textbook. Write the strategy before the topic sentence. After each sentence, use exactly three bullets to list point-form indications of how the sentence will be developed in the paragraph (study the chapter to get ideas about what points to use).

Example (based on the first Learning Outcome for Chapter 3):

Development Strategy: Reasons

Topic Sentence: Messages project a professional impression when effective editing strategies are used. No one writes effectively without editingEditing is more than proofreading—it is considering suitabilityEditing shows you care about your audience

GRADING –each of the four sentences is worth 2 marks. 1 mark for grammatical correctness.1 mark for creating topic sentence well suited to the chosen strategy and accurately reflecting the chapter.

PART B (4 marks—0.5 marks each)

The following paragraph contains many errors. At the end of each line, mark the number (from the list below) that corresponds to the particular fault. There may be more than one error per line, so it is very important that you put the numbers in the correct order. Hint: there are two errors per line.

Example:

Some cool students will love this question, others will hate it.

This sentence contains slang ("cool" #4) and a comma splice (#6). The numbers in the box correspond to these faults from the list below and the numbers are listed in the order that the faults occur.

Paragraph:

Having arrived punctually on time for the exam, a written excuse was not needed.

However, his exam performance didn’t cut the mustard, Stan had not studied at all.

The reasons were because Stan worked late, hates exams, and is prone to lapses of concentration.

I guess I don’t need to tell you that, for Stan, the exam sucked.
