Govt – Writing Assignment

Please chose one of the three topics to write your end of semester essay.  As you will note, you need not do any outside research to write this paper. This paper should primarily reflect your opinions, ideas, knowledge, and concerns. Mechanical instructions are included in the document below along with the three topics from which you may choose one to write about.  Paper is due by end of day this coming Friday, December 11.  Please write me if you have any questions or need any assistance.  This paper, which is one of the five graded exercises in the course, will allow many of you to raise your overall grade as I drop the lowest of the five grades this semester and average the four remaining. You can do well on this paper.  Just sit at your computer and talk to me about what I’ve asked you.  Before you send it to me, read over it, make corrections where you see that a sentence or a phrase made sense which you were writing it but not when you’re reading it.  Don’t worry.  That’s part of the writing process: Get your ideas down, then go back and clean it all up, and submit that revised, reworked paper.

    • Who  do  you  want  to  be  the  next  president  of  the  United  States  and  discuss   why,  giving  at  least  three  reasons  why  he  or  she  should  be  president  based   upon  what  you  know  about  the  candidate  right  now  from  what  you’ve  heard  or   read  about  the  candidate  from  family,  friends,  the  news  media,  and  from  social   media  (such  as  Facebook,  Twitter,  blogs,  etc.).

    • If  your  impressions  are  vague,  simply  discuss  what  you  know  and  tell  me   where  you  have  heard  what  you  know  and  how  you’ve  reached  your  decision.

    • IF  you  want  to  do  some  research  on  the  Internet  you  may  and  include  that   information.    Be  sure  to  state  where  you  got  the  information,  give  the  URL,  and   make  sure  you  properly  show  that  it  is  from  the  source  you’ve  found.

    • You  do  NOT  have  to  do  any  research,  however.    I  really  want  to  read  about   what  you  know  now,  where  you  learned  it  in  general,  and  why  you’ve  made  the   decision  the  way  you  have.

    • In  that  same  manner,  tell  me  who  you  do  NOT  want  to  be  president  and  why.     What  about  this  person  have  you  heard  or  read  that  makes  you  worried  that  he   or  she  might  become  president.    Give  two  or  three  specific  reasons  based  on   your  impressions  and  opinion.

WHAT  HAVE  YOU  LEARNED  IN  THE  COURSE

    • Discuss  the  five  most  important  things  you’ve  learned  about  government  this   semester.

    • Did  you  know  about  these  things  before  or  did  you  learn  about  them  now,  this   semester?

    • Why  do  you  consider  them  important?   • What  issues  that  have  been  discussed  in  your  study  and  reading  affect  your  life

in  a  significant  way?   • Are  you  more  or  less  interested  in  government  and  politics  now?   • Is  government  and  politics  important  in  your  life  now  based  on  your  studies

this  semester?    Why  or  why  not?       TERRORISM     During  this  semester,  ISIS  terrorists  attacked  six  locations  on  November  13  in   Paris  France  killing  130  people  and  wounding  413  people.    On  December  2,  14  people   were  killed  and  21  wounded  in  a  terrorist  attack  in  San  Bernadino,  California.    It  has   been  determined  that  the  man  and  wife  who  conducted  the  attack  had  ties  and   allegiances  to  ISIS.    Other  terrorist  attacks  have  occurred  over  the  past  several   months,  however,  these  two  have  gained  the  most  attention  here  in  the  United  States.   In  your  essay,  discuss  some  of  the  following  points:

    • Have  you  been  following  the  news  about  these  and  other  terrorist  incidents?   • Are  you  concerned  or  fearful  of  terrorist  attacks?   • What  do  you  know  about  ISIS  and  their  beliefs  and  goals?   • Where  did  you  learn  this?   • Do  you  believe  you  are  safe  and  that  our  country  is  safe  from  this  terrorist

movement?   • What  should  the  government  do  to  protect  you  and  your  family?   • Do  you  agree  with  Governor  Greg  Abbott  that  immigrants  fleeing  from  Syria

and  the  fighting  there  and  across  the  Middle  East  should  not  be  given   sanctuary  in  Texas  or  even  the  United  States?    Why  or  why  not?

    • Discuss  your  general  understanding  of  why  these  people  who  have  created  this   movement  called  ISIS  are  doing  what  they’re  doing.    Are  they  in  any  way   justified?    Do  you  consider  you  and  your  home  threatened?    If  so,  why?    If  not,   why?

Again,  I  am  seeking  your  ideas  and  opinions.    You  do  not  need  to  do  outside  research.     I  am  interested  primarily  in  what  you  know  now  and  what  your  opinions  are  now   based  upon  the  knowledge  and  sources  you’ve  received  over  the  past  few  months  and   what  were  some  of  those  sources.
