For this assignment, you will critique the simulation video of a social work practice session using all that
you have learned this past semester and critique the performance of this counselor. A link to the video is
available below. Be sure to include a critique of all of the skills listed on the skills rubric on page 2 below.
Simulation Video Critique (3-pages): Your paper should include a detailed description on the multitude
of techniques that the counselor is attempting to execute and where they fall short. Specifically, give
examples from the video, as well as cite the course readings to make your points. This critique should be
detailed and nuanced. Remember to use specific examples demonstrating the use, good or bad, of the
technique by the social worker, your critiques of that use, and cite the course readings to support all of
your critiques. The paper should not be a narrative of concepts separate from your critique of the video.
Self-Reflection (3-pages): The paper should conclude with a self-reflection of where you feel you are at
with your practice skills after this course. For this portion of the assignment, you will write a selfreflection of your own practice skills development. In your self-reflection, you should a) highlight your
strengths and weaknesses b) identify your future learning needs, and c) discuss areas that you want to
develop. Further guidance for writing your self-reflection can be found on page 2 below.
Requirements for writing your paper
1. The paper should be a total of 6-pages. You should write a 3-page critique of the simulation
video and a 3-page self-reflection.
2. This paper should be in APA format and use course readings as citations to support your claims.
Submission Instructions
• Your paper must be submitted via Blackboard in: Assignments tab. Click on link: “Final Project –
Simulation Assignment” and follow instructions to upload your paper to Blackboard.
Grading of the paper will have two aspects.
• 15% of the student’s grade will be based on your critique of the simulation interview and how
well the student has learned and is able to demonstrate their understanding of social work
interviewing skills learned in class. See the attached skills rubric to see how this portion will be
graded. Students should be sure and review the rubric before watching the simulation interview
and again before writing the self-reflection paper so you will remember the criteria being used
to grade your work and the skills you need to write about in your paper.
• 15% of the student’s grade will be based on the quality of the student’s self-reflection of their
practice skills. Imagine that you were interviewing the client, what will you do the same or
differently in your interview? Use the guidance for the written self-reflection portion of the
paper below to formulate your reflection.
Skills Rubric for Analyzing Simulation Video
Your paper should provide a critique of the counselor’s use of the following interviewing skills:
• Establishing positive rapport with client
• Use of open body language, avoids distracting body movements
• Staying with what the client wants to talk about, no sudden changes in topic without using
transitions appropriately
• Encouraging client to talk
• Remembering what client said and returning to it
• Demonstrates active listening skills

Guidance for your written self-reflection
For this portion of the assignment, you will write a self-reflection highlighting your development of your
practice skills. In your self-reflection, you should a) highlight your strengths and weaknesses b) identify
your future learning needs, and c) discuss areas that you want to develop. Some questions you may
consider may include the following:
• Do you feel prepared to conduct a successful interview?
• Do you feel prepared to conduct an ethical interview?
• What skills will you demonstrate?
• What social work values will you draw on to complete your interview (e.g, dignity, worth of the client)
and how can you convey this?
• What techniques will you use to demonstrate your interviewing skills?
• Comment on your behavior, attitude, and/or appearance
• How will you create an atmosphere where the client feels comfortable?
• How will you use self-awareness skills to ensure that you do not distract the client and create a sense
of privacy throughout the interview (e.g., avoid fidgeting and/or unnecessary intrusions)?
• What skills will you use to build a working alliance?
• How will you convey empathy to build and maintain rapport with the client?
• How will you demonstrate understanding, attentiveness, and respect?
• What will you do or say to convey that you are listening attentively (e.g., eye contact, nodding)?
• How will you convey interest and encouragement?
• What type of questions will you use (e.g., open, closed, probing)?
• Describe your tone of voice and the pace of your speech. How will you use them effectively and/or
ineffectively to complete the interview?
• Will you use silences, and if so, how and why?
