focus: Drawback and Alternatives to Advice In lectures and during labs we have discussed ways to support a client. We have also discussed giving advice, and why it is NOT helpful for a client. There are multiple ways that a counsellor may give advice to a client. You have probably noticed these examples happening in your lab practice. Forms of advice are: Direct advice, expressed directly (i.e. “You should get a job!”) Direct advice, expressed tentatively (i.e. “Maybe you should get a job”) Direct advice, in the form of a suggestion (i.e. “What would probably make you feel better is getting a job”) Indirect advice, in the form of a closed question (i.e. “Have you considered getting a job?”) Indirect advice, in the form of an indirect question (i.e. “I wonder if you have considered getting a job” or “I wonder if getting a job would help”) Indirect advice, in the form of personal disclosure (i.e. “What made me feel better when I was in your position was getting a job”) By referring to the above list, provide two (2) examples of how you generally tend to give advice to people around you. Be specific in defining each example (2 mark) How was the type of advice you mentioned in #1 demonstrated during your lab? Did you give the same type of advice to clients during your lab practice, or you were able to apply micro skilled learned during the semester? Give examples of what you said or did (verbally and non-verbally) with your client that shows you are using professional/counselling skills. (2 Mark) Counselling skills require ongoing practice. How could the skill you mentioned in #1 #2 be strengthened? Give examples of what you would say or do (verbally and non-verbally) with your client in the future that would be an improvement. How will you make these improvements? Give specifics steps you will take to improve. (2 mark) Using your textbook and the readings on Blackboard (under Learning Materials each week) give three (3) reasons why giving any form of advice is NOT helpful to your client. Make sure you cite the readings you use in your answer, and include them in a reference list. (0.5-1 page answer, written in paragraph form). (2 Mark) Using your textbook and the readings on Blackboard (under Learning Materials each week) give three (3) alternative to giving any form of advice to your client. Make sure you cite the readings you use in your answer, and include them in a reference list. (0.5-1 page answer, written in paragraph form) (2 Mark)
