The prompt- What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
Our idea for the essay:
Swimming and how it taught me to not be afraid to fail, not taking life too seriously, and time managements between being a student athlete, making time for friends and family and having a job
It was the Summer of being a fish. I spent so much time in the water, I was starting to feel like I might grow gills. Having gills meant spending most of my time staring at a black line on the bottom of the pool. I was in the sun so much that my tan lines were like night and day. Like a dolphin, I felt at peace in the water. Floating on the surface, nearly weightless, I was truly free. My love and passion for swimming is what keeps me going. This is how I maintain motivation and strive to reach my goals in life.
It was my freshman year. I could feel my heart beating out of my chest as I stood atop the starting block towering over the pool. Setting my feet firmly and gripping the edge of the block as tight as I could, Anxious for the start, I told myself “You’ve trained for this your entire life; you’ve got this”. Then the officials made the call “Take your mark!” *BEEP*: My body took over. *Right-Left-Right-Left*: muscles burning, *Flip–kick-kick-kick*: Burning, *Flip-Kick-Right-Left*: almost there, *FLIP* *KICK* *RIGHT* *LEFT* *RIGHT* *LEFT* *REEEEACH*: exhale. Gasping for air, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I did it! Top three! But more importantly, my best time ever.. Hugging my teammate that was in the lane next to me, all she said was “Good job Katie, your hard work finally paid off”, and the tears rolled down my face. This was one of the greatest swim moments ever!
Swimming isn’t just about going fast. It’s about dedication. It’s about striving for a goal that is months or sometimes years away. It’s about going to practice every single day and making it count. Not just going through the motions. It’s about balancing athletic time with student and study time. It’s about knowing that those “days off” that you might take once in a while are really just days that you have to make up for. When I say I’m a swimmer, I’m not talking about speed, I’m talking about sacrifice, dedication, passion and a lot of hard work
The content and message is weak.
We’re struggling with how to turn this into a good essay.
