Intellectual Foundations (Final Paper)
The final project is centered on a
Critical Autoethnographic methodological investigativ approach.
Paper Completion
A research paper is required for the
successful completion of this course. In this paper, you are to use at
least seven sources to examine a major topic related to the course
materials, Ethnic & Racial Diversity in Society. All
required materials can be used as sources for this paper. Topics may come from
sections discussed in class, or they may derive from issues that you find of
interest. This paper requires you to reflect on the normality of
racism. Using the society, you are to identify a specific
unit of analysis and identify the meaningful ways microaggressions operate to
victimize the oppressed. You will be allowed to stretch definitions
microaggression to include all of the forms of interactions informed by unequal
power relationships. While one individual may wish to look at the normality
of racism in the classroom (teacher interactions, curriculum choice,
aesthetics, etc.), another individual may choose to look at the normality
of racism through the lens of food packaging or labels in grocery
stores. Once you have identified a unit of analysis, you must develop an
argument that identifies the normality of racism in the “space” you have
selected. Your argument must be based on scholarship, not just your opinion.
You are not making up stories to support your ideas. There are plenty of real examples
to draw from. If I were to look at the normality of racism in
the classroom, for example, I would find articles that highlight scholarship on
this topic (the required text for the course is full of great examples,
however). Once I have identified materials to “build” on
(scholarship), I would then be able to insert my personal life story (if I
chose) into the discourse. Afterward, I would identify and explain the
meaningful ways my own racial identity informs my thinking about the
case(s).
Example (classroom):
Normality of racism in the
classroom
Literature review (teacher interactions,
social foundations of education, culturally competent pedagogy, detention
rate, etc.)
Speak to my personal story (this
is not a requirement at this point, but might help to enhance your
critical reflection and writing skills)
Identify microaggressions and
types (microinvalidation, microassault), and provide clear examples
(literature, your story)
Address how your “findings”
connect to the larger discourse on racial and ethnic diversity in society
(again, you must explore the literature)
(Critical autoethnography) discuss
your feelings about your topic.
Have your ideologies
concerning the normality of racism changed, explain?
What was the most interesting finding,
explain?
What was the most troubling finding,
explain?
How has the course influenced your
understanding of the normality of racism, explain?
You must connect your ideas to
current events (perhaps even address a current event in the news)
Reflection: Conclusion, tell me
what you wish about the writing process, review of literature, final
product……..here, you problematize the emotional work of addressing
the normality of racism in the topic you chose.
Paper Development/Requirements
Introduce your topic to the reader. Present the
materials in a clear, concise voice. Act as if the reader does not have
any prior knowledge of the materials. The introduction should provide a
clear overview of the topic and give the reader a preview of what to
expect in the formal presentation. Here you must define your terms for the
reader. ( 1-3 pgs. 75 pts.)
Thoroughly research & present your topic (what have
other people written about your topic)? Summary of relevant information
(Literature Review). Identify relevant themes Provide the reader with
scholarly insights into your subject matter. At this stage, you are
focused on what others have already written about your topic. Scholarship,
not your opinion, drives this stage of the paper. It is important
that you conduct a thorough investigation and explain, in concrete
language, the “social history” of your chosen topic. Identify 2 major
themes that surfaced as you reviewed the literature? What seems to be the
general focus of the person, group, era, etc. you have chosen to
investigate (Approx. 2-4 pgs. 150 pts.)
Identify microaggressions and types (microinvalidation,
microassault), and provide clear examples (literature, your story) (Approx.
2-4 pgs. 75 pts.)
Address how your “findings” connect to the larger
discourse on racial and ethnic diversity in society (Approx. ½ – 1
½ pg. 25 pts.)
(Critical autoethnography) discuss your own feelings
about your topic.
Have your ideologies concerning the normality
of racism changed, explain?
What was the most interesting finding,
explain?
What was the most troubling finding,
explain?
How has the course influenced your understanding of
the normality of racism, explain?
Reflection: Conclusion, tell me what you wish about the
writing process, review of literature, final product……..here, you
problematize the emotional work of addressing the normality of
racism. (Approx. 2-5 pgs. 200 pts.
Identify the contemporary/historic connection (How
historic events frame your current work)? For example, (racial) social
foundations of education (institution) influence pedagogical decisions of
educators. ( 1-3 pgs. 25 pts.)
The
paper must include an abstract and reference page (not counted as full pages)
1. Identify your research problem & objectives (What were you trying to resolve/explore)? My research resulted in finding many articles regarding my topic about Treyvon Martin and how his death could possibly be a result of a racism case The key objectives throughout most of the articles depended on a Black Lives Matter protest Treyvon Martin was killed cold blooded by Zimmerman who was already stereotypical I am trying to speak about the stereotypical people in the world and how being prejudice about a certain group could cause a tragedy like this
2. Your method (Critical Autoethnography)? I am not sure if you are asking my method of research? However my method of research was the web, and some video documentaries off of youtube. The reason I chose this topic was because I feel strongly about the Black Lives Matter movement.
3. What did you discover about yourself, the culture, and the society? I discovered that before this class I always had the wrong idea of was being prejudice was, Professor Harvell taught me that being prejudice is kind of like being stereotypical in a way. While doing this research I have realized that most of society including myself tend to have a pre judgment on a certain person whether it is there skin color or there ethnic / religion group
4. Main conclusion of the paper? The main conclusion of my paper would definitely have to be about how Americans are shaped to believe that certain people of color may be “bad” because of a person who may or
may not be the reason
