Subjects may have trouble understanding some of the survey questions or how best to answer the questions. Participants may also lack an understanding in the purpose and anonymity of the survey. While the researcher should fully disclose to the participants information on the study, there is potential for misunderstanding or miscommunication without in-person contact or availability. The survey is a means to determine how common feelings of sadness or being overwhelmed, and thoughts of suicide are among this student population. For those suffering from depression, the survey may allow for a feeling of relief after opening up. Others may feel the opposite, shame and regret. There is a risk in asking such personal questions and some participants may not even be fully honest in their answers. The survey question could be a potential trigger. Name at least one strategy the researcher can use to minimize the risks of the study. This survey is anonymous, but having a counselor or therapist nearby could help minimize the risks. An option might be to have a therapist ask the questions to each participant in person. It is against the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act for a therapist to disclose personal information. Therefore, the therapist would legally not be allowed to present to the researcher patient identifiers with each survey response. A licensed therapist is trained in reading people based on body language, eye contact, voice changes. The therapist should be able to pick up on sensitive topics that the individual needs to or is willing to talk about. The therapist will also be able to know who is high risk for harming themself and provide intervention necessary to combat this. Therapy sessions are expensive, and it takes many individuals a long time to trust someone else and be able to open up. Providing this as a free service with the survey has the potential to save those who are feeling overwhelmed and hopeless.
