Overview
The goal for this assignment is to:
Apply your knowledge of memory to your experiences.
Engage in discussion with classmates.
Instructions
Everyone has specific memories of important, consequential moments from their lives that seem very vivid and full of details as we remember them. These “flashbulb memories” are as if someone flashed a picture of these events, and so they seem clear, vivid, and highly detailed when, in actuality, they may contain many errors. It’s as if the very emotionality of the memory is distorting the event being remembered.
For this assignment, think about some memory from your past, which was an experience you shared with another person. It’s important that you have someone who should have the same memory of the event because they were there with you. Try to stay from memories of traumatic events; I don’t want anyone to be distressed by this assignment. So long as the memory is emotionally consequential, impactful, or important and someone else shared this event with you, you’re on the right track. The event may even be a happy memory like adopting a pet, a wedding, or a day at an amusement park.
Initial Post
Your response should be a minimum of 150 words and include the following:
First, think of the specific memory and write down what you remember.
Then approach the person who experienced this event with you and ask them what they remember (remember not to “prime” them with your memories).
Then compare your memories to theirs. How did the memories differ? Why do you think some details were different for each of you?
Replies
Reply to at least two classmates. Each response should be a minimum of 75 words each (not including your greeting). Try to choose a classmate who does not yet have a reply.
You may comment on your classmate’s memories, possibly offering insight into the differences they observed.
You may answer your classmates’ questions about the content (e.g., explanations, videos, links, memes, etc., that help explain the concept),
Note: Please remember to be respectful and considerate of the experiences of others.
