Case Study
I was dispatched to a 999 call for a Category 1 call for a Unknown aged female having respiratory problems, on my arrival i was met by the mother of the patient who had stated that the patient in question had lost her friend due to Mental illness, the patient has been drinking a high level of alcohol for the past 2 months, we was the 3rd ambulance to come and assess the patient, we walked upstairs to find very intoxicated women on the bed, there was a lot of blood in a washing up bowl on the floor, when assessing the patient i asked the patient where did all this flood come from, the mother of the patient had stated that she has been having alot of bleeding PV for the passed couple of months, i was very concerned and my colleague completed a set of observations it has shown that the patient was Tachycardic with a Heart rate of 150bpm respiratory rate of 22rpm blood sugars 5.3mmols spo2 98% on room air 12 lead ECG was Sinus Rhythm, i was very conserved with the patient’s condition and requested that we take her to hospital, the patient became more aggressive shouting at us stating that she didnt want to go into hospital, i then completed a Mental Health Capsity assessment which the patient failed, the patient was heavely intoxicated couldnt retain the information weight up the complications if the patient stayed at home, i spoke to our clincial hub for advise and the senior clinican requested for police support to help us out with the patient to go to hospital as she was becoming aggressive, on arrival the police they had a full hand over from the crew and they was very reluctant to help the crew as they was a private ambulance service and was not a NHS crew, the police delayed the crew for 5 hours as we had to wait for a Local Operations Manager to come and help the crew with the patient and police, the Local Operations Manager assisted crew with there assessment and agreeded that the patient did not have capacity, the local manager submitted a Clinical Incident report to the local safeguarding teams
